Smoke Alarm
Ionization AC Direct Wire with 9V Battery Backup

Model# 1276E
Kidde smoke alarms are designed to minimize nuisance alarms. However, there are some circumstances, which may sound the alarm or cause a “chirping sound” without the presence of smoke. Cigarette smoke will not normally set off the alarm, unless the smoke is blown directly into the alarm. Combustion particles from cooking may set off the alarm if the alarm is located close to the cooking area. Below are some areas to avoid when mounting smoke detectors.
- In the garage
- Areas where the temperature may fall below 40 deg or exceed 100deg Fahrenheit
- In dusty areas. Dust particles can cause nuisance alarms or failure to alarm
- In insect-infected areas
- In very humid areas. Moisture or steam can cause nuisance alarms
- Near fluorescent lights. Electronic “noise” may cause nuisance alarms

The 1276E is equipped with a “HUSH” feature, which has the capability of temporarily desensitizing the alarm circuit for approximately 7 minutes. This feature is to be only used when a known alarm condition activates the alarm. Such conditions may include smoke from cooking, car exhaust in the garage, dust or insects present inside the smoke detector housing. If the alarm resulted from smoke from cooking, and the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately and “chirp” every 30-40 seconds for approximately 7 minutes. The smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately 7 minutes and sound the alarm again if the smoke is still present. The “HUSH” feature can be used repeatedly until the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm. Pushing the test button on the alarm will end the hush period.
NOTE: Dense smoke will override the hush control feature and sound a continuous alarm.
CAUTION: Before using the alarm “HUSH” feature, identify the source of the smoke and be certain a safe condition exists.
LED Indicators: This smoke alarm is equipped with (2) LED lights. One is red and the other is green.
The RED LED has two modes of operation:
Standby Condition: The red LED will flash every 30-40 seconds to indicate that the smoke alarm is operating properly.
Alarm condition: When the unit sounds the alarm, the red LED will flash rapidly (one flash per second). The rapid flashing LED and pulsating alarm will continue until the alarm is deactivated.
WHEN UNITS ARE INTERCONNECTED, only the red LED of the initiating alarm will flash rapidly. All other units in the house will sound an alarm but their red LED’s will NOT flash rapidly.
The GREEN LED has two modes of operation:
Standby Condition: The green LED will be steady on, indicating the presence of power.
Alarm Condition: This smoke alarm is equipped with an alarm memory, which provides a visual indication when an alarm has been activated. A flashing green LED indicates the memory condition. The memory will remain activated until it is reset by pushing the test button.
WHEN UNITS ARE INTERCONNECTED, only the originating alarm will have the flashing green LED.
In the case of a nuisance alarm, do the following:
- First, check to make sure that there is NO FIRE OR SMOKE PRESENT. If smoke or fire is present, leave the premise immediately.
- Press the “Hush” button on the nearest alarm to quiet the system. NOTE: the alarm will “chirp” every 30-40 seconds until the cause is cleared.
- Look for the unit with the flashing GREEN LED. This is the initiating unit. In most all cases of nuisance alarms, car exhaust, insects or dust has infiltrated the smoke alarm, causing it to falsely alarm. Remove the initiating alarm by rotating the alarm clockwise in the direction of the “OFF” arrow on the cover. Disconnect the A.C. power harness by squeezing the locking arms on the side of the Quick Connector while pulling the connector away from the bottom of the alarm.
- Clean the interior of the alarm by using compressed air, a vacuum cleaner or by simply “blowing” into the unit. The outside of the unit can be wiped with a damp cloth. After cleaning, reinstall your alarm, verify the GREEN LED is on and test your alarm by depressing the TEST button for a minimum of two (2) seconds. This will sound off all of the alarms and reset the system.
In the case of nuisance chirping, do the following:
- Check the battery. This alarm will chirp every 30-40 seconds if the battery is low or is missing. Replacing the battery will correct this condition.
- Sometimes a temporary loss of power will make the smokes detectors chirp. If power is interrupted at any time (such as switching from temporary to permanent power in new construction or temporary loss of power due to a lighting storm) the smokes alarms may exhibit a chirping sound, similar to the low battery sound. In this case, simply depress the test button on any alarm for a minimum of two (2) seconds. Wait until all the alarm units sound (this will take about 3-4 seconds). Let go of the test button at this time and the system will be reset.
