2.  FIND A SCHOLARLY ARTICLE – ELECTRONIC

Return to the course page…. Notice that on the far right there is a list of databases. A database you might have used before is Ebsco Academic Search.

BUT INSTEAD OF SEARCHING ACADEMIC SEARCH, go down and open Communication and Mass Media Complete http://www.libraries.iub.edu/scripts/countResources.php?resourceId=1758947

…which focuses on articles in the field of mass communications. [note: this is the deep web, i.e. IUB pays for access to this copyrighted material. These articles are not all free so you would never find them just in google.]

a. Search mae west

How many articles did it identify? ______

b. Look through the titles and notice one that is entitled: “Out of Eden: The Legion of Decency, the FCC, and Mae West's 1937 Appearance on The Chase & Sanborn Hour.”

This article is “pdf” so is available online but all may not be.

3.  Finding official regulations and laws from the government (federal). Kind of the “one-stop” shopping location is www.firstgov.gov, the portal to U.S. Federal Government agency sites.

4.  One place to search for the legal perspective is Lexis Nexis Academic at http://www.libraries.iub.edu/scripts/countResources.php?resourceId=145 (IUB subscribes and it provides more hyper-linked materials than Thomas.) (for more legal sources see your class page under Legal resources):

Try searching for mae west. Go to Legal Sources on the bar on the left; then select Law Reviews. Enter the search to see more than 50 law review articles. Narrow the search done by using fcc or the date.
