WHY WE ARE CELEBRATING 5 OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS

Everyone’s heard of Neighbourhood Watch, but how many people know that it’s the largest voluntary movement in the country? That’s why the Neighbourhood & Home Watch Network (NHWN) is marking Volunteers’ Week (1st – 7th June) by celebrating the work of five outstanding volunteers who make their communities safer places to live.

“Volunteers’ Week is a great opportunity for us to showcase some of the brilliant things that Neighbourhood Watch coordinators and members do,” said Jim Maddan OBE, Chair of NHWN. “We often talk about how effective we are at preventing crime, but less often about all the other ways in which Neighbourhood Watch makes communities nicer places to live – getting neighbours talking to each other and making improvements to the local area.

“This week we will bring you five stories of inspiring Neighbourhood Watch volunteers and we hope it will encourage other people to do something positive for their community – or even speak to a neighbour for the first time!”

From home brewing to stubborn rabbits, you can read about a side to volunteering you never knew existed as Neighbourhood Watch volunteers tell their stories in their own words. They will be published on the NHWN website at www.ourwatch.org.uk/news_and_events/news

Note to editors

The Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network is the voice of the movement across England and Wales.

The Network works closely with the Home Office, the Police Service, Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and other likeminded organisations.

Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch members believe that everyone has a right to feel safe where they live. We promote that right by building strong, friendly, active communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are less likely to happen.
