General description

This position is established within our team of Wellington-based research writers, who are responsible for the efficient planning, writing and completion of research reports. Research writers’ work is published in Consumer magazine, on our website and elsewhere as decided by Consumer.

Research writers are responsible for proposing story ideas and carrying out investigations and tests, from inception through to final publication.

Research writers are responsible for managing several projects at the same time, so need to display considerable initiative and be able to work with a minimum of supervision. Good writing skills, accuracy and attention to detail are essential.

Specific duties

  1. Taking responsibility for specific areas of research
  2. Project managing research articles, including:
  3. Undertaking detailed research and conducting interviews
  4. Managing any testing process, budget and timeline
  5. Analysing research data
  6. Consulting with interested groups, commentators and individuals and obtaining expert comment
  7. Communicating the direction and progress of research, including issues and potential legal implications to the Head of Research
  8. Obtaining independent verification of research findings
  9. Participating in the article production process, including meeting production deadlines, checking page-proofs for accuracy and suggesting artwork.
  10. Reviewing and updating website articles, databases and other online material
  11. Developing a network of contacts
  12. Keeping up-to-date on developments in a specific area of research, for example, new products or legislative changes
  13. Generating story ideas
  14. Providing, when required, assistance and guidance to other staff
  15. Responding to members' inquiries
  16. Representing Consumer as required, for example to manufacturers, retailers, government and media
  17. Writing submissions to government
  18. Any other investigations or duties that may be allocated from time to time.

General attributes and background

The position requires a person with judgment, maturity and tenacity. You will need to be the kind of person who is not put off by antagonistic traders, lawyers and others who disagree with what we do.

You must be a good storyteller, able to write with flair without sacrificing accuracy.

Relevant tertiary qualifications are highly desirable.
