EDUCATION ASSOCIATE

JOB SUMMARY:

The Education Associate is responsible for maintaining and expanding MCASD’s relationship with schools and higher education institutions in our area, and encourages group visits by community organizations. The Education Associate will lead the Museum’s School and Educator Programs including the Extended School Partnership (ESP) program. These partnerships encompass the coordination of partner-school visits, arrangement of educator training and curriculum development sessions, organization of school showcases and require teaching in-gallery, and in-school sessions at partner-schools which are located throughout San Diego County. Education Associate will also play a role within the Education Department and will be contributing to and supporting Museum wide initiatives and programs, such as Summer C.A.M.P, Family ArtLABs and the Teen Advisory Group (TAG).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

·  Support the Education Department with the development, management, and implementation of School and Educator programs, as well as participate in development of other education initiatives and Museum wide programs.

·  In collaboration with the Education Curator and the Communications department, assist in the promotion of broader School and Educator Programs including promotion to San Diego Unified School District and Museum Council liaisons.

·  With the Education Curator, supervise and mentor an intern for School and Educator Programs.

·  Provide information to schools, visitors, teachers, and the public about the Museum’s institutional history, membership, exhibitions, public programs, and visitor services.

·  Work special events, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and/or after regular business hours as needed in the Museum’s Downtown and La Jolla locations, and off-site programs.

·  Follow safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

·  Other duties as assigned.

School Tours and ESP Programs

·  Develop arts integrated curriculum to support the Gallery Educator’s team responsible for teaching K-12 programs.

·  Create web-based lesson plans and resources for K-12 teachers interested in learning more about contemporary art through our collection.

·  Research, develop, implement, and evaluate programs for students and educators from Grade K through 12, including our signature program ESP.

·  With the Education Curator and in coordination with the Curatorial team develop and deliver educator, and Gallery Educator trainings for exhibitions, and permanent collection including site specific works throughout MCADS campuses.

·  Oversee the production of educator resource materials for exhibitions and promotional materials for school programs.

·  Purchase supplies for school programs and coordinate the use of facilities with Hospitality & Events and Security Services departments.

·  Liaison and act as the primary point of contact for contract, for partnering schools and head team of Gallery Educators working as lead partners for ESP.

·  With support of the Education Assistant, oversee logistics and scheduling for the MCASD after-school programs, ESP partnerships, and other school program initiatives.

·  Teach and facilitated in-gallery and classroom lessons as needed.

Tour/Gallery Educator Programs

·  Supervise, train, and evaluate MCASD’s corps of part-time Gallery Educators.

·  Direct daily activity of Gallery Educators and set job assignments as optimal for ongoing school, youth and public programs and initiatives.

·  In partnership with the Education Assistant schedule tours and ESP program visits and GE trainings and educator programs into the Education Master Calendar.

Educator Programs

·  Work with SDCOE to schedule ongoing VAPA standards workshops.

·  Coordinate all aspects of Educators Engage, a professional development program for K-12 teachers and higher education faculty designed to make our exhibitions more accessible to all.

·  With Education Curator develop and implement (or contract expert) to conduct Educators’ Engage topic-based educators professional development workshop.

·  Plan for Educators Reception.

·  Develop self-guided materials in partnership with two or three classroom teachers to encourage educators to visit the Museum on their own.

Teen Program

·  In collaboration with the Education Curator, develop and implement all activities related to the Teen Advisory Group including teen workshops offered to teens outside TAG.

·  Collaborate with local artists to design two workshops to support TAG’s learning objectives and to be presented to a broader group of teens.

·  Oversee logistics and day-to-day administration for all teen programs.

·  In collaboration with the Education Curator, recruit and select incoming TAG members for academic year.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Strong project coordination and organizational skills with an emphasis in attention to detail and follow-up. Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of employees. Clear motivational skills with the ability to supervise and train entry-level interns and employees. Deep understanding and ability to create and implement education programs. Self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a group environment. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment. Proficient computer skills, including in MS Office, and Acrobat Suits. Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art Studio, or Education and three years recent, relevant experience working with youth audiences in a museum setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with adolescent and teen audiences preferred. Non-profit experience preferred.

·  Candidates must have experience teaching the visual arts in a museum, classroom or community-based setting. Interdisciplinary experience combining the visual arts and other disciplines, such as social studies, language arts, or science is a plus.

·  Candidates must be familiar with current museum education trends and have experiences leading gallery-based discussions that combine visual arts and art history focusing contemporary art and utilize visual thinking and inquiry-based learning strategies.

·  Candidates should have experience in classroom management and establishing a strong rapport with students, teachers, and school principals and fellow educator audience.

·  Candidates with knowledge of San Diego County Office of Education and San Diego Unified School District personnel, procedures, and experience in the teaching in California are preferred.

·  Bilingual abilities and/or experience with students with special needs or English Language Learners (ELL) is a plus.

·  Supervising experience is a plus.
