Horstmar, August 2012 – "120 years of innovation" - that is Schmitz Cargobull's motto at this year's IAA. The market leader presents its comprehensive range of semitrailers, trailers and truck box bodies at Stand F22 in Hall 27 and in theadjacent outdoor exhibition area.

In the case of further and new developments, customised solutions are at the forefront: More payload and less fuel consumption, less weight, more efficient loading and unloading, permanent safety and more driving and loading comfort for freight and driver. On top of that you have the most comprehensive range of services to be found among the trailer manufacturers, which consistently reduces the total cost of ownership and allows the customer to concentrate on his core business.

New S.CS MEGA curtainsider semitrailer with SPEED CURTAIN
– quick opening or closing in less than 35 seconds
By means of an easy release on the tailgate or on the bulkhead, the tarpaulin folds together like an accordion when it is pushed. Thanks to a ball-bearing mounted steel roller guide in the upper roof beam and on the chassis frame, opening or even moving the entire package to the front or the rear becomes child's play. In less than 35 seconds, the forklift is able to start loading or unloading. In addition, with interlocking loading no other means of securing loads are necessary. This reduction in the time required to prepare or complete the loading process directly improves the driver's use of driving time.

In contrast to other quick-release systems, SPEED CURTAIN eliminates the need for side stanchions and slats. As such there is no chance of parts "going missing" or a risk of injury caused by falling slats. All of the tarpaulin tensioners can be operated at road height, so that it is no longer necessary to climb onto the loading area. The tensioners have a ratchet design which also offers greater protection against hand injuries. Removing the belt tensioners on the side of the trailer eliminates air turbulence and the improved aerodynamics reduces the fuel consumption (approximately 1.0-1.5% potential fuel savings for the trailer). In addition, lettering becomes considerably easier and thus more cost-effective to apply. Furthermore, washing bays also clean better and cause less wear.

Thirty pairs of lashing rings in the external frame provide optimal lashing points. There is no need to clamber dangerously between the pallets. Special load securing rails in the floor and in the roof structure enable the use of locking bars for safely securing loads in a backward-facing direction.

All the requirements in accordance with DIN EN 12642 Code XL, the VDI Directive for beverage transport and DL Directive 9.5 for the transport of freight on loading beams are met and documented by certificate.

Another new product for the S.CS curtainsider semitrailers is the optional new floor with an increased coefficient of sliding friction of 0.6 μ. This coefficient of sliding friction is achieved via a special plastic coating on the floor. The advantages are obvious: With partial loads, fewer lashings are necessary for securing the load. The driver therefore requires less time for lashing the goods.

S.KO COOL reefer semitrailer - new double decker loading equipment for increased flexibility and load securing

The S.KO COOL is one of Schmitz Cargobull's leading products. At the IAA 2012, Schmitz Cargobull is displaying the tried and trusted deep-freeze trailer with new, efficient detailed improvements for more flexibility, lighter unladen weight and easier handling. An example of this is the new, wall-integrated flush-fitted double decker loading equipment, which makes it possible to transport 66 Euro pallets.

Profiles optimised in both shape and function make the entire system lighter, with an identical load bearing capacity of 1,000 kg per double decker beam and it thus provides extra total payload.

In the case of double decker systems readily available on the market, the double decker beams can only be moved in stages and sideways. Schmitz Cargobull's double decker beams can be moved easily and diagonally into the correct position. By means of a height marker for the beam position in the double decker rail, they can be pushed into the correct position more quickly and effectively. An additional mobile, horizontal load securing rail may be used for fastening the beams and thus the Euro pallets flexibly on the second level. When not in use, the beams may be pushed right under the roof. The roof evaporator is partially recessed in the roof and increases the overhead clearance by approx. 40mm.

The new partition is not only weight-optimised but also has an optimised sealing system which makes for less wear and even better leak-tightness.

Our own refrigeration unit direct from the vehicle manufacturer
For the first time, Schmitz Cargobull is introducing a prototype of a self-developed refrigeration unit, at the IAA 2012. The refrigeration unit is also fitted with the new TCI (TrailerConnect Interface), which replaces the temperature recorder in use to date. The system unit reports all the relevant information about the trailer to the haulier or also directly to the loading personnel or recipient. The idea behind the new design is as follows: The complete integration of all of the system-relevant components in the vehicle for temperature-controlled transport of goods and foodstuffs provides both economical and ecological benefits for the carrier, for freight safety and for the environment. With this system-optimised refrigeration unit, Schmitz Cargobull is the first trailer manufacturer to guarantee complete responsibility for the transport component of the cooling chain.

S.KI LIGHT tipper trailer with rounded steel body from 5 t unladen weight – light unladen weight and thus more payload makes it profitable

Use on the building site with its tight scheduling demands payload-optimised, low-maintenance and, above all, economical transport solutions. The unladen weight and the consequent payload play an important part in this. In order to increase the payload, where the vehicle is used for short trips and for frequent tipping on the building site, there is a frequent tendency to resort to aluminium box bodies, which are, however, subject to greater abrasion.

The new S.KI LIGHT is designed in such a way that it can be supplied from an unladen weight of 5 t, despite its rounded steel body and torsion-resistant, welded steel chassis. The vehicle has approximately the same payload capacity as an aluminium box body. With the rounded steel body, however, abrasive materials like sand, pebbles, aggregates and asphalt can be transported much more economically. The floor thickness of 4 mm and a side wall thickness of 3.2 mm allow the area of application to be extended to the transport of light

rubble and ballast. The connection console and the tarpaulin operation have also been optimised. This means better handling for the driver.

New S.CF 40` container trailer chassis with Sliding Bogie for optimised load distribution of 20’ containers.

Placing at least 25% of the vehicle's weight on the tractor unit drive axle is not only EU regulation-compliant for cross-border traffic but also improves the trailer's running performance and its roadholding.

The S.CF container trailer chassis with Sliding Bogie carries all standard containers between
20` and 40`. This container trailer chassis's trump card is its sliding bogie with convenient controls. The Sliding Bogie is extremely easy to operate and the universal chassis, e.g. for 20‘ containers up to 30 t, saves time and expense - for drivers, loading personnel and the hire company. For loading and unloading a 20’ container, it is pushed, flush with the rear of the vehicle, up to the ramp. For transportation, the container is brought back into a central position, so that the axle loads are optimally distributed. Since only two wheelbase positions can be selected, handling is easy and mishandling can be prevented.
Also, Schmitz Cargobull supplies an S.CF with Sliding Bogie which can take almost any type of container between 20’ and 45’. The new 40’ container chassis with Sliding Bogie technology can be operated even more easily and is more robust. That makes it ideally suited to frequent driver changes and the rough treatment encountered in the vehicle hire business.

The pneumatically-lowered mudguards for faster moving of heavy 20’ containers and longer mudguard life even on bad roads are also new.

New: For the gooseneck semitrailer container chassis with rear extension (S.CF EURO, MX and LX), the dynamic ALP (Axle Load Program) is available as an option. As a result of the specific raising or lowering of the bellows pressure on the first chassis axle, the centre of gravity shifts, so that the load distribution and thus the trailer load is markedly improved.

As a result of better fifth-wheel loading, which is achieved either by the Sliding Bogie or the use of ALP, tyre wear is considerably reduced on the tractor unit drive axle.

New S.KO EXPRESS with new folding wall technology for dry freight.
This vehicle has an increased loading capacity of 34 Euro pallets (67 with double decker loading equipment). The S.KO EXPRESS with folding wall is available in two versions, NORDIC and EU, in accordance with the requirements of the various markets.

Compared to its predecessor, the new EU version has had its weight reduced by 600 kg to 8,480 kg, which meets the requirements for greater payload. The longitudinal and cross beams on the chassis are galvanised and bolted and make easy, fast repairs possible in the event of damage.

Truck box bodies -
Schmitz Cargobull on its way to becoming the preferred partner of the OEMs

M.KO truck box body – for individual distribution transport and its new quiet running floor
At the IAA, Schmitz Cargobull is presenting a wide variety of truck box bodies for individual distribution transport. All the bodies are compatible with the motor vehicles produced by the leading manufacturers. The basis of the M.KO is a high-strength body made of FERROPLAST®, with gluing and joining technology ensuring outstanding stability. The ingenious modular concept allows all the essential box vehicle characteristics to combine freely.

The customer is able to choose between weight-optimised 45 mm or insulation-optimised 60 mm wall thicknesses. He also has a choice of three different weight classes: From the nippy 11.99-tonner, for supplying small businesses, to the flexible 18-tonner for variable capacities (with or without trailer) and the 25-tonner, as an efficient body for the through-loading trailer. Depending on the type of commercial task, the customer has a choice of four lengths: 7,820mm, 7,990mm, 8,290 mm and 8,900 mm.

The interior fittings vary as much as the bodies. Versatile internal fittings and partitions for multi-compartment vehicles with different temperature zones, reversing camera for an exact approach to the ramp, adjustable strip curtains for unwanted air exchange or load securing rails for optimally securing loads. The galvanised, bolted subframe ensures compatibility for all the leading tractor unit manufacturers. The finely-adjusted hole patterns in the frame
permit the body to be force-fitted to the manufacturer-specific and vehicle-specific attachment points.

M.KI tractor unit tipper body - the right tipper body for construction vehicles
For transport on the building site, Schmitz Cargobull provides the right M.KI tipper body and a perfect fit for the job, for almost any type of tractor unit. The basis for the bodies is a highly wear-resistant rounded steel body. Thanks to the versatile modular system,

they can be equipped in various lengths (4,500mm, 5,000mm, 5,500mm or 5,800mm). Customers can also choose between a variety of side wall heights and material thicknesses.

Schmitz Cargobull offers the right rear wall version for every purpose. It might be an internal pendulum flap with a chute for optimal use on road finishers or external pendulum tailgate with surrounding seal which also allows for partial loads. A hydraulic hinged tailgate, supported or with a chute, is also available as an option. The latter has been optimally designed for heavy building site or demolition site use. The designers have developed their own optimised body geometry for a favourable centre of gravity. Standard body shapes have a high body centre of gravity, Schmitz Cargobull's optimised body geometry keeps the load's centre of gravity low and properly centred for tipping.

The features are just as individual as the body. Whether it's the body positioners, side fender plates, gearbox covers, light protection plate, canopies, ladders ... (the list goes on). There is no end to the additional equipment options which make the M.KI the tailor-made building site vehicle.

Schmitz Cargobull is also displaying trailers and tractor unit bodies from its comprehensive product range:

  • The M.KO truck box with tractor unit, with an overall weight of less than 11.99 t
  • A robust S.SF sliding floor trailer for waste disposal and recycling businesses
  • The S.CS UNIVERSAL curtainsider with load securing examples. For demonstration purposes, one side of the vehicle is equipped with a TIR-approved tarpaulin for increased safety and effectiveness in international TIR transport.

Technical enhancements

In terms of the technical details and features the focus was also on reducing the gross weight and thus providing more payload.

  • ROTOS®+ chassis with new Schmitz Cargobull self-steering axle. When the steering axle is used, cornering is improved considerably and there is much less tyre wear.

Efficient transport with new and improved services:

  • TCI (TrailerConnect Interface) is Cargobull Telematics' innovative, certified solution as a replacement for the conventional temperature recorder. The combination of TCI and the TrailerConnect®control unit is certified as a temperature recorder in accordance with DIN EN12830 and thus constitutes a convenient, affordable overall solution as an alternative to conventional temperature recorders. By using the two components (TCI and TrailerConnect Control Unit) it is possible to take advantage of the wide-ranging telematics features in addition to convenient, reliable temperature recording and documentation. From now on, the DCI will be a standard component of S.KO deep-freeze trailers ex-works (for vehicles registered in Germany).
