- Stated that all men are created equal
- Battle of Bunker Hill
- British “victory” even though over 1,000 British soldiers were killed or wounded
- Important for the colonists because of the confidence gained due to their ability to hold their own against the British
- Fought on Breed’s Hill
- Second Continental Congress
- George Washington appointed to head the new Continental Army
- “Olive Branch Petition” sent to King George to ask for peace one more time
- Declaration of Independence was written and signed

- Burgoyne had 600 wagons he was taking though the wilderness

- Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown
- French and Indian War (1775-1763)
- Great Britain and France fight for power in North America
- British want to claim Fort Duquesne to drive French out of Ohio River Valley
- William Pitt takes over British foreign affairs and helps take control over two rivers to block French supplies from getting to troops
- Effect: Britain wins and becomes the main European power in North America, but had to pay financially for the war
- Boston Tea Party (1773)
- British began to tax colonists on their tea in order to help pay for the French and Indian War. Colonists believed this was “taxation without representation”
- Group of colonists lead by Sons of Liberty snuck onto British tea ships dressed as Native Americans
- Dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor
