Key Responsibilities

Provides a Peer Recovery program to clients of the Rockingham Kwinana Adult Mental Health service. Supports participants in the program to attend to their physical health and wellbeing.

Brief Summary of Duties(in order of importance)

1. Client and team support

  • Draws on own lived experience to provide consultation to members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding consumer perspectives and a focus on recovery.
  • Works cooperatively with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to enhance the provision of appropriate mental health assessment and treatment for individuals and families of the Rockingham Kwinana Mental Health Service.
  • Provides peer mentoring to clients of the multi-disciplinary mental health team on a daily basis.
  • Encourages and assists participants who do not have a regular General Practitioner (GP) to find a GP.
  • Encourages and supports participants to locate and access health related services to improve their overall physical health and wellbeing.
  • Assists participants to make health related appointments and where necessary accompany the person to the appointment.
  • Provides participants with information, resources and support to assist them to ask relevant questions that will ensure their physical health needs are met.

2. Community liaison and consultation

  • Acts as an advocate and assists consumers and families in advocating on their own behalf.
  • Providesexpert guidance about people’s rights as well as information and resources relevant to the Peer worker role.

3. Administration

  • Maintains appropriate records and documentation to ensure accountability and to comply withlegislative responsibilities.

4. Professional development and supervision

  • Participates in regular supervision and performance development with own line manager.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge and skills through participation in relevant self-directed learning, training workshops and networks.
  • Participates in quality improvement and internal audit activities as required.

SMAHS Duties

  • Performs duties in accordance with the relevant Occupational Safety and Health and Equal Opportunity Legislation and WA Health Code of Conduct.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Government, WA Health, South Metropolitan Area Health Service and Departmental / Program Specific Policies and Procedures.
  • Participates in a continuous process to monitor, evaluate and develop services and performance.
  • Undertakes other duties as directed.

Work Related Requirements

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated lived experience as a consumer of mental health services.
  2. An understanding of peer support, self-determination, the concept of consumer recovery andgeneral knowledge appropriate to the role.
  3. Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  4. Well-developed communication, interpersonal and report writing skills.
  5. Ability to use a personal computer and knowledge of relevant software (e.g. MS Word,Windows, Excel).
  6. Current “C” or “C.A.” class drivers licence.

1.Knowledge and experience working in peer support within a mental health service.

Appointment is subject to:

  • Working With Children (WWC) Check, compulsory check for people who carry out child-related work in Western Australia.
  • Completion of 100 point identification check

  • Successful Pre-Employment Health Assessment
