Part VIII. Major essay on exam:
As you revisit the various works we have read this year, consider the similarities and the differences in how the works represent an American perspective, message or ideal, and how those perspectives, messages or ideals are presented. Then write an essay explaining how your Book of Choice can be considered characteristically American and how that idea is also presented in at least two of the other works we have read this year. You will demonstrate your understanding of this in an essay using concrete examples from your texts. Your answers must be consistent with the actual messages that the authors send throughout each of their works AS A WHOLE.
I suggest creating a thesis statement that answers this message clearly and concisely in two or three sentences. While you may not bring this into your actual exam, it is an essential part of your planning, reviewing and studying.
You will need to use concrete evidence AND at least one actual quote from each work in your final essay on the exam (your quotes must be incorporated correctly), and you must discuss each work individually. You must also use at least one semicolon and one colon correctly in your essay.
Other than the quotes, you will not be able to use any additional material or have any of your essay prewritten. You should be familiar enough with your thesis and have reviewed sufficiently to be able to describe your ideas without needing additional notes beyond your quotations.
You will need to finish in the time allowed so make sure you plan accordingly.
Notes: One incident (or character) may not necessarily be representative of the message as a whole. Make sure you are consistent with the actual messages that the authors send throughout each of their works AS A WHOLE.
Make sure you clearly explain what the concrete evidence proves.
