Resolution on CSU GE Area D header language

Whereas California State University Chancellor’s Office Executive Order 1100, which defines certification for CSU GE, defines the requirements for area D as follows:

In Area D, no fewer than 9 semester units (12-15 quarter units), with courses taught from at least two different disciplinary perspectives.

Whereas College of the Sequoias’ current CSU GE pattern language for area D states:

Must choose at least one course from Group 1 and one course from Group 2 (9 units minimum). If HIST 17 or 18 is used to meet Area C2 above, choose one course from Group 2 and two additional courses from Group 1 and/or Group 3.

Whereas Groups 1 and 2 as defined in the current CSU GE pattern as written at COS require students to choose courses in the disciplines of HIST and POLS,

Whereas local community colleges such as Bakersfield College, Fresno City College, Porterville College and Reedley College have area D language that allows their students more flexibility in choice of Area D course disciplines (as permitted by the Area D language in CSU EO 1100),

Whereas College of the Sequoias admits transfer students from these and other colleges with similarly flexible requirements,

Whereas adopting more flexible language for the CSU GE in area D would grant COS students the same advantages and flexibility that surrounding community college students are privy to,

Whereas a key part of the COS Mission is to help our diverse student population achieve its transfer objectives, and flexible options would provide students additional paths to graduation, transfer, and student success,

Therefore, be it resolved that the current language for College of the Sequoias’ CSU GE area D be modified to: “Choose 3 courses (9 units minimum) from at least two different disciplines,” followed by a list of courses organized by discipline, with language “highly recommending” History 17 or 18 and Pols 5 for meeting the American Institutions CSU graduation requirements.
