CITI Guidance

For Initial and Continuing Review Submissions, CITI Training Certificates for all research personnel listed on Initial Application Part 1 and/or the consent forms are required to be submitted to the Tulane IRB.

If the submission requires both documents (Initial Application Part 1 and consent forms), then CITI should be submitted for individuals listed on both documents.

-  If the study is Biomedical, all study team members should complete the Biomedical (group 1) Research for Investigators and Key Personnel course.

-  If the study is Social Behavioral, all study team members should complete the Social and Behavioral (group 2) Research for Investigators and Key Personnel course.

-  We may also accept the CITI Good Clinical Practice course.

-  CITI Training certificates expire three years from the completion date and the completion date is listed on the certificate.

-  Please make sure all certificates are not expired before they are uploaded.

-  If your research involves study team members that are not affiliated with Tulane, we may accept those study team members’ CITI Training or ethical research training certification from another institution; however, these certificates will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for compatibility to Tulane’s CITI Training.

CITI and IRBNet

IRBNet has created a new feature that allows each individual registered IRBNet User to “add” their CITI Training certificate to their User Profile. Once your CITI Training certificate has been added to your User Profile, it can be “linked” to any submission for any study that has been shared with you. By linking a certificate to a submission, it eliminates the process of uploading the certificates to each submission. Each registered IRBNet User that is a research study team member will need to: 1) complete CITI Training if you have not done so previously, and 2) follow the steps below to link your CITI Training certificate to your IRBNet User Profile.

To add your CITI Training certificate to your user profile:

Complete CITI Training at www.citiprogram.org and save your CITI Training Certificate (completion report) to your computer.

If the study is Biomedical, complete the Biomedical (group 1) Research for Investigators and Key Personnel Course. If the study is Social/Behavioral, complete the Social and Behavioral (group 2) Research for Investigators and Key Personnel Course.

1.  Login to IRBNet using the username and password you created.

2.  Click ‘User Profile’ and scroll to the Training & Credentials section.

3.  Click ‘Add New Record’, fill in the document type (Choose Other), effective date (completion date), expiration date (3 years after the completion date), and then choose and attach the CITI Training certificate.

To link CITI Training certificates to a package:

After you have created the package, Click ‘SHARE THIS PROJECT’ then ‘SHARE’, and select Tulane University. Search for all research personnel whose CITI Training certificates must be linked to the submission and share the project with them.

NOTE: You can only share a project with registered IRBNet Users.

Click ‘DESIGNER’ and then Click ‘LINK/UN-LINK RECORDS.’ Check the boxes next to the names of the research personnel whose CITI Training certificates must be linked to the submission and click ‘SAVE.’ You can click ‘VIEW ALL LINKS’ to view the list of whose CITI Training certificates were linked to the submission.

As stated in the Initial submission checklists and Secondary submission checklist, CITI Training certificates are required to be submitted or “linked” to each initial submission and continuing review submission, for all research personnel listed on Initial application part 1 and/or the study consent/assent forms. We plan to roll out this new process in two steps.

1.  Effective immediately, all research personnel must add your CITI Training Certificate to your user profile.

2.  Effective August 4, 2011 after the 3pm deadline, CITI Training certificates will be required to be linked to submissions.
