The just mentioned special offer will stay in place during the period beginning ten days before the inauguration of the Seminar and until ten days after its closure. They will apply to those participants who shall confirm their assistance by sending a fax with the attached form (see the last page of this file) to the Coordination, before January 14. No form will be processed unless it has been filled with all the requested information and duly signed. After the deadline the hotel does not warranty neither room reservation nor the previously indicated rates.

According with local legislation, the 18% value-added tax will not be charged to foreign visitors paying their bills in American dollars (cash, traveler checks or credit card).

Check-in and check-out hours are 03:00 pm and 01:00 pm, respectively. Visitors arriving early in the morning may wish to consider including the night before arrival as part of their room reservation.

Room reservations will be confirmed following strict first-come-first-served basis for those forms duly completed and signed.

(3)VENUE

The Seminar as well as the Workshop will take place at ECLAC´s headquarters: Avenue Dag Hammarskjöld s/n (no building number) in the District of Vitacura, Santiago, Chile (a ride by taxi from the Sheraton Hotel to ECLAC´ building shall take approximately ten minutes). (4)TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN AIRPORT AND HOTEL

The organizers regret to inform that they cannot provide neither greeting services at the airport nor transportation to the hotel.

Upon arrival at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago (usually known as Pudahuel Airport), cost and security considerations make advisable to take an official airport taxi (the trip from Pudahuel to the Sheraton currently costs CH$ 15.000 and takes about 30 minutes under normal trafic conditions). Alternatively, one may use a colective mini-bus of Trans-Vip (the current fare is CH$ 4.500 per passenger and the travel time is contingent upon the number and itinerary of each user). For those arriving after a flight of several hours, the first alternative seems to be clearly superior.

(5)TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN THE SHERATON HOTEL AND ECLAC

Free of charge daily bus services will be provided during the Seminar and Workshop, to bring the participants from the Sheraton to ECLAC in the morning, and to take them back to the hotel by the end of the afternoon.

(6)MONEY EXCHANGE

At the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítezairport there is a money exchange booth (rates are superior).

At ECLAC there is a branch of the Banco de Chile. Its office hours are from 09:00 (am) to 02:00 (pm), however money exchange operations will be attended from 09:00 (am) to 01:45 (pm).

The exchange rate (to sell American dollars and to buy Chilean pesos) is currently (during the first half of November, 2002) around CH$ 700. The exchange rate regime in Chile is one of independent flotation. For this reason, and due to the actual volatility of exchange markets, it is not possible for us to forecast the nominal level of the exchange rate by the end of January.

(7)SIGNING UP FOR THE SEMINAR:

The only requirement is to send a fax addressed to the Coordination and signed by a responsible government official, indicating the name, job position, institutional attachment and coordinates for contact (telephone, fax, e-mail) of each nominee. Representatives of international organizations or academic institutions, as well as individual participants, are also required to send by fax the same kind of information.

(8) REGISTRATION:

It will take place on Monday 27th of January, from 8:30 to 9:00 (am), in the lobby of the Raúl Prebisch conference room at ECLAC headquarters.

(9) SIGN-UP FEES AND SEMINAR COST

No fees are required for signing up, registering or participating in the Seminar and/or Workshop

Additionally, the materials to be presented at the meeting will be distributed free of charge to the head of each delegation.

Travel, lodging and meals costs are the responsibility of each participant. The severe budgetary constraints under which United Nations (in general) and ECLAC (in particular) operate, do not allow us to finance participants. It is expected that each participant provide the necessary resources to fund the trip.

(10) CHILEAN ENTRY VISA

Foreign participants are kindly reminded that they must ascertain in the Chilean consulate of their country of residence, what are the requirements and necessary procedures to get a visa and for complying with all migratory regulations from the Chilean authorities.

For those participants living in countries where there is no Chilean Consulate, ECLAC will make arrangements with the Ministry of Foreing Affairs to facilitate their entering to the Chilean territory. However, each interested party having a valid passport is required to inform the Coordination, through fax and with a minimum precedence of two weeks before arrival: name, country of residence, nationality and passport number.

(11) WEATHER

January is summer in Santiago. At this time of the year the weather is usually dry and warm, mainly during the afternoons. At night the temperature is cooler and quite pleasant. The average temperatures in the afternoons show highs averaging 25-30 degrees Celsius, while during the night frequently have lows of around 10-15 degrees Celsius.

(12) SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION

It will be provided simultaneous English-Spanish interpretation.

(13) LIABILITIES AND INSURANCES

According to United Nations rules, the organizers assume no liabilities for any king of accidents and/or illness that may affect and cause the participants to seek medical attention of any kind during their stay in Santiago or during the course of their travels to Santiago and/or back to home. Consequently, everybody is advised to take whatever insurance he/she might feel adequate, before leaving his/her place of origin.

After registering in the Sheraton, please ask at the Conciergerie for an envelope containing the final version of the program, a preliminary list of the participants´ names, a map of the city and some other useful information for your stay in Santiago. Should any other information be needed, please contact the Coordination.
