Milton Keynes Learning Disability Partnership Board

/ Who are we?
We are a group of people with learning disabilities, family carers and staff who work with people with learning disabilities. We meet 6 times per year to look at how to make services better for people with learning disabilities in Milton Keynes.
/ When the Government wrote theValuing People White Paper in 2001, each area had to have a Partnership Board to watch over the work being done on learning disability services. Valuing People came to an end in March 2011, but Milton Keynes Partnership Board agreed to carry on and make sure good work keeps happening.

/ How does it work?
We have subgroups which do different work for the Partnership Board:
-Health
-Keeping Safe
-Profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)
-Carers
-Housing
-Workforce Planning (this is about finding and keeping good staff)
-Food, Fun and Fitness
The subgroups meet regularly and update the Board on their work at least once per year.
/ Learning Disability Services are checked by the Government and the Board and subgroups can help with these checks.
/ What happens at meetings?
People with learning disabilities meet in the morning before the Board to talk about what is going on. They get support to do this from a self-advocacy service called Talkback. Talkback also visit different learning disability services to find out what people think before the Board meeting. People’s thoughts and ideas are written or drawn on a big piece of paper and talked about at the meeting in the afternoon.
/ Family carers and staff from services who work with people with learning disabilities also meet in the morning before the Board meeting.

/ In the afternoon, everyone comes to the Board meeting and talks about what was said in the morning groups. This way everyone can have their say on the work we need to do. We have 3 co-chairs and 2 of the co-chairs have a learning disability.
