History of Visual and Performing Arts (HVPA)

Course Objective

Students in HVPA will be exposed to a variety of arts though active experiences in music, art, theatre and dance. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultural significance of each art form through performing, creating, and responding to various works of art.

Course Outline

1st 9 weeks – art

Students will learn to:

-use appropriate terminology to create, analyze and evaluate the use of elements of art and principles of design

-describe, analyze and evaluate distinguishing characteristics of visual art representing a variety of world cultures and historical/style periods

Supply list for this unit: pack of white cardstock paper, watercolors (tray of 16 colors), glue, pack of multi-colored construction paper, 2 black sharpies, and a ruler.

2nd 9 weeks – theatre

Students will learn to:

-use appropriate terminology to analyze and evaluate the use of elements of drama

-describe, analyze and evaluate distinguishing characteristics of dramatic work representing a variety of world cultures and historical/style periods

3rd 9 weeks – music

Students will learn to:

-use appropriate terminology to identify and analyze the use of elements in a variety of music

-Play short songs on the keyboard

-describe, analyze and evaluate distinguishing characteristics of music representing a variety of world cultures and historical/style period

4th 9 weeks – dance

Students will learn to:

-use appropriate terminology to create, analyze evaluate the use of elements in a variety of dance

-describe, analyze and evaluate distinguishing characteristics of dance representing a variety of world cultures and historical/style periods

Grades

1. Students will be given a daily grade based on participation/effort. The following scale will be used:

Zero (0) points – no participation

One (1) point – does not participate most of the time and/or is disruptive to the learning environment)

Two (2) points – participates and does not cause any disruptions

2. Quizzes, tests, mid-term and final exams will follow the grading scale as noted in the FHS student handbook.

3. Students are required to submit 2 research-based writing pieces. One will be due at the end of the 2nd nine weeks. The second is due on May 1st, 2015.

Student Responsibilities

1. Follow all FHS school rules. Learn to accept the consequences of your behavior.

2. Have the proper respect for those in authority and for your fellow classmates.

3. Show the proper respect and care for all classroom items. You are responsible for replacing anything that you damage or destroy.
