Cornea Transplant Post Operative Instructions

1.  DO Rest for the first 24 hrs after your operation.

2.  Do return to your normal activities when you feel ready. You may read,watch TV,sleep on any side, go for walks.

3.  Do resume all previous medications and diet.

4.  Do wear sunglasses during day while outside.

5.  YOUR SURGEON WILL ADVISE WHEN YOU MAY RETURN TO WORK.

6.  Do not rub your eye

7.  DON”T get soap or water in the operative eye. Close eye when bathing .You may shower 24 hours after your surgery.

8.  Do not drive a car. Your surgeon will tell you when you can drive

9.  Do not bend or stoop (do not lower your chin below your heart). It is safe to bend at the knees as long as you keep your head straight.

10. Do not do anything that would put pressure or strain on your eye. Do not cough or blow your nose excessively.

11. Avoid straining when you go to the toilet.

12. Do not lift anything heavier than 5 to 10 pounds

13. Do not do any strenuous physical activities like swimming, jogging, aerobics or sex for 1 month after your operation.

How to care for your operative eye

·  It is normal for your eye to be red, blurred, uncomfortable, sensitive to light and teary after this operation. These symptoms are normal and may gradually improve over next few days and weeks.

·  You will have a dressing /patch on your eye following surgery DO NOT REMOVE . Your surgeon will remove the dressing at your first post-op visit.

·  After your dressing is removed you may gently clean away secretions using a clean washcloth and warm tap water. Do not use any commercial eye washes.

·  DO NOT RUB YOUR EYE

·  We will give you a plastic shield to be worn at night for 6months. This may be secured with a piece of tape.

·  PAIN RELIEF: Your eye may feel achy and/or tired. You may take 1 to 2 extra strength Tylenol tablets every 4 hours. Please make sure you take precautions as to not become constipated. Do Not take Asprin or any products containing ASA until your Physician approves.

·  Some Pain Medications may cause constipation. To prevent this drink plenty of fluids and eat foods high in bulk.(bran etc.) If necessary take a mild laxative such as milk of magnesia.

·  EYE DROPS: You Surgeon may have already given you a prescription for drops. If not you will be given one at your first post-op visit. You will be instructed by your Surgeon on how often to put drops in. Always wash your hands before administering your drops. Bring your eye medication with you to all of your appointments.

EMERGENCY CARE

The Kensington Eye Institute is not a 24 hour facility.

Call your surgeon’s office if:

You experience severe pain in your operative eye.

You experience increased redness or a gush of fluid from your eye.

You experience dimming of vision.

You experience a fever of more than 38C or 101F

You experience yellow or green purulent discharge.
