COMPILATIONS

The first step is determining if the resource being cataloged is a collaboration or a compilation. Sometimes that distinction is presented in a statement of responsibility not given in the same location as the title proper; in RDA there is no restriction on location of statements of responsibility.

If the resource is a collaboration, see 6.27.1.3.

If the resource is a compilation, the next step is to determine if the works are by one creator or by more than one creator. Note that it doesn’t matter if the works have been published before being included in the compilation and there are no restrictions on genre (novels, songs, letters, poems, maps, etc.).

If the works are by a single creator, the next steps are to determine the following:

- determine if the compilation has a title by which it has become known;

- if it has not become known by such a title, determine which instruction in RDA 6.2.2.10 applies;

- if RDA 6.2.2.10.3 applies, decide to apply the basic instruction (give analytical authorized access points for all the works) or one/more aspects of the alternative (give a conventional collective title + “Selections” in lieu of or in addition to giving analytical authorized access points for all the works). During the US RDA Test, LC testers will give the conventional collective title + “Selections.”

If the compilation consists of works by different creators, use the preferred title to name the compilation (RDA 6.27.1.4).

Another RDA element is applicable to compilations. RDA 17.8 (Work manifested) requires giving the predominant or first-named work in a compilation; others can also be identified. RDA 17.4 names three conventions for giving this element: an identifier, an authorized access point, or a composite description. (Note that AACR2 21.30M says to give “an analytical added entry under the heading for a work contained within the item being cataloged.”)

During the US RDA Test, LC testers will use the convention of an analytical authorized access point when giving the predominant or first-named work in a compilation. However, they will also apply cataloger judgment whento give an analytical authorized access point for the predominant/first-named work. LCPS 17.8 has the following policy statement:

“For compilations of works, give an analytical authorized access point for the predominant or first work in the compilation when it represents a substantial part of the resource. Disregard contributions such as a preface or introductory chapter. Generally, do not apply this core element to anthologies of poetry, conference proceedings, journals, collections of interviews or letters, and similar resources.”

5. AACR2 -- compilation of some of the works in a single form if the person created works in more than one form:

100 1# $a Poe, Edgar Allan, $d 1809-1849.

240 10 $a Poem. $k Selections

245 14 $a The raven and other favorite poems / $c Edgar Allan Poe.

Comments:

1. AACR2 does not allow the use of the conventional collective title “Selections” alone as a uniform title for a compilation (complete or not) of works in a single form if the person created works in more than one form.

2. LC’s AACR2 record would not include a 240 field; the LCRI for AACR2 25.10 says not to use a uniform title if the title is considered to be adequate.

5. RDA -- compilation of some of the works in a single form if the person created works in more than one form if a conventional collective title is used as the preferred title:

700 12 $a Flaubert, Gustave, $d 1821-1880. $t Hérodias.

Comment:

#1. AACR2 25.3A says to use the title in the original language that has become commonly known. This compilation has been published numerous times with the same title proper.

#2. AACR2 21.30M says to give analytical added entries.

9. RDA -- compilation of works by a single creator if the title proper of the compilation is commonly known

505 0# $a Un cœur simple -- La légende de Saint Julien l'Hospitalier -- Hérodias.

700 1# $a Flaubert, Gustave, $d 1821-1880. $t Cœur simple.

Comment: RDA 6.2.2.4 says to use the title in the original language that has become commonly known. Wording is being added by the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA to the beginning of RDA 6.2.2.10 saying to use a conventional collective title only if there is not a commonly known title.

10. AACR2 -- compilation of works by different creators with no collective title:

100 1# $a Steinbeck, John, $d 1902-1968.

240 10 $a Red pony

245 14$a The red pony / $c John Steinbeck. The catcher in the rye / J.D. Salinger.

700 12 $a Salinger, J. D. $q (Jerome David), $d 1919-2010. $t Catcher in the rye.

10. RDA -- compilation of works by different creators with no collective title:

700 12 $a Steinbeck, John, $d 1902-1968. $t Red pony.

Comments:

#1. AACR2 21.7C says to identify the compilation by the heading appropriate to the first work and to give a name/title added entry for the other work.

#2. In RDA a compilation of works by different creators is not named as a whole.

#3. A cataloger could choose to devise a title proper for the RDA record (see the alternative at RDA 2.3.2.9).

700 12 $a Steinbeck, John, $d 1902-1968. $t Red pony.

Comments:

#1. AACR2 21.7B says to enter the compilation under title and to give name/title added entries of both if there are only two works.

#2. In RDA a compilation of works by different creators is not named as a whole.

12. AACR2 -- sound recording of different works with single performer

110 2# $a Solido (Musical group)

245 10 $a Aferrado a ti / $c Solido.

505 0# $a Cuidado -- Te vas -- Aferrado a ti -- Deberia -- Dulce niña -- Soy libre -- Cuando vuelvas -- Llegaste tu.

12. RDA -- sound recording of different works with single performer

245 00 $a Aferrado a ti / $c Solido.

505 0# $a Cuidado -- Te vas -- Aferrado a ti -- Deberia -- Dulce niña -- Soy libre -- Cuando vuelvas -- Llegaste tu.

710 2# $a Solido (Musical group), $e performer.

730 02 $a Cuidado.

Comments: RDA does not have a counterpart to AACR2 21.23 to enter a sound recording under the performer automatically; to be the creator for the sound recording, the performer’s role must involve “substantial creative responsibility for adaptation, improvisation, etc.” (see RDA 6.28.1.5).

= = = = =

13. AACR2 -- performer as creator

100 1# $a Dylan, Bob, $d1941- $e composer, $e performer, $e lyricist.

245 10 $a Highway 61 revisited / $c Bob Dylan.

505 0# $a Like a Rolling stone -- Tombstone blues -- It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry -- From a Buick 6 -- Ballad of a thin man -- Queen Jane approximately -- Highway 61 revisited -- Just like Tom Thumb’s blues -- Desolation row.

Comment: AACR2 21.30M says to give name/title added entries for works in a collection. The LC practice for sound recordings generally was not to give such added entries because the contents of sound recordings were not generally considered to be works in a compilation. (The concept of “compilation” in RDA is much broader.)

13. RDA -- performer as creator

700 12 $a Dylan, Bob, $d 1941- . $t Like a rolling stone.

Comments:

#1. Because Bob Dylan is the creator of all the songs in this compilation, there is no difference between AACR2 and RDA in naming the compilation.

#2. If the cataloger did not think that “Highway 61 revisited” was a commonly known title, adding a conventional collective title (240 10 $a Songs. $k Selections) per the alternative in RDA 6.14.2.8.6 or giving access points for all the works would be required.

14. AACR2 -- 2 maps on one sheet with no collective title

110 2# $a AAA (Organization : U.S.)

245 10 $a Iowa ; $b Nebraska / $c AAA.

260 ## $a Heathrow, FL : $b AAA, ©2010.

14. RDA -- 2 maps on one sheet with no collective title

110 2# $a AAA (Organization : U.S.)

245 10 $a Iowa ; $b Nebraska / $c AAA.

260 ## $a Heathrow, FL : $b AAA, [2010].

710 22 $a AAA (Organization : U.S.). $t Iowa (2010).

Comment: The scope of what is considered to be a compilation is much broader in RDA than it is in AACR2. There is no RDA equivalent to AACR2 1.1G1 (if no collective title, treat title of predominant part as title proper and give other title in a note).

= = = = =

15. AACR2 -- compilation of translations in the same language of works by a single creator

100 1# $a Petterson, Per, $d 1952-

240 10 $a Novels. $l English. $k Selections

245 10 $a Three Norwegian novels / $c Per Petterson.

505 0# $a Out stealing horses -- To Siberia -- In the wake.

700 12 $a Petterson, Per, $d 1952- . $t I kjølvannet. $l English.

Comment: The LCRI for AACR2 21.7B required an analytical added entry for each work if a collection with a collective title contains no more than three works.

15. RDA -- compilation of translations in the same language of works by a single creator

100 1# $a Petterson, Per, $d 1952-

245 10 $a Three Norwegian novels / $c Per Petterson.

505 0# $a Out stealing horses -- To Siberia -- In the wake.

700 12 $a Petterson, Per, $d 1952- $t Ut og stjæle hester. $l English.

700 12 $a Petterson, Per, $d 1952- $t Til Sibir. $l English.

700 12 $a Petterson, Per, $d 1952- $t I kjølvannet. $l English.

Comment: This RDA example follows the basic instruction in 6.2.2.10.3 to name all the works in the compilation (the 700 fields in the RDA example above); the RDA alternative says to assign an appropriate conventional collective title in addition to or in lieu of the 7XX fields. So, a 240 field “$a Novels. $l English. $k Selections” could be included.

LC RDA examples: Preferred title, etc.
