Julia Bjerke Memorial Scholarship

The Julia Bjerke Memorial Scholarship is awarded to remember Julia Bjerke and to remember the importance of student and teacher outreach in local high schools. Julia Bjerke was encouraged to pursue a metallurgical engineering education by her high school chemistry teacher. Thanks in part to outreach efforts by the Peoria Chapter of ASM, her chemistry teacher was informed about metallurgical engineering and materials engineering. She went on to obtain a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Illinois and become a metallurgical engineer at Caterpillar Inc. She later received a M.S. in Manufacturing Engineering from Bradley University. While at Caterpillar, Julia was especially known and respected for her leadership in advanced surface metrology and her technical expertise in x-ray diffraction. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage interest amongst local high school students to pursue metallurgical and materials engineering as a career to populate the area and world with more knowledgeable and friendly materials engineers like Julia Bjerke.

Up to two (2) $1000 scholarships may be awarded to graduating high school seniors or transferring year junior college students residing in the Peoria Chapter area who have been accepted into accredited universities to study materials science and engineering. In August, the Executive Committee will determine the number of scholarships, so that the recipient(s) can be announced in April of the following year. Because the recipient(s) must prove they are enrolled in the materials science curriculum and prove they meet the college GPA requirements, the money will not be awarded until January/February of their first college year. For example, in September 2012 the Executive Committee will decide how many scholarships, which will be awarded in February 2013. The money will be provided in January/February 2014. Traditionally preference is given to high school students.
