Course aims:
Summarise in 10 classesthe changes in Venice 1600–1800, the decline in power culminating in the end of the Republic in 1797:governmental system, economy, social organisation and the interfaces between these and the artistic production of the city and the immediately surrounding region (the Veneto)
Course description:
The decline in Venetian art of the 17th century and the rise of the great 18th-century period of Canaletto, Guardi and Tiepolo will be discussed in the context of failing Venetian political and economic power.

The Veneto; The decline of Venetian power; Ottoman Empire; The Plague of 1630; Tintoretto and Veronese; Longhi and Ricci; The two Tiepolos; The vedutisti (Carlevaris et al.); Canaletto; Bellotto and Guardi

1. Name at least two factors that contributed to Venice’s decline
2.Describe briefly the work ofthree Venetian painters from the period 1700–1800
3.Describe briefly the relationship between Venice and the Ottoman Empire
4.Describe briefly the political changes brought by Napoleon’s rule
