Summer Vacation - Just around the corner!
Our 2013–2014 school year is coming to a close, but not before we experience a number of activities and events both in and out of the classrooms! June is a very busy month with student learning activities and projects being completed in classrooms, track and field meets to participate in, and field trips to experience!
The month begins with the annual Manitoba Catholic Schools track and field meets for grades’ 7 and 8 on Monday, June 9th and the grades’ 4-6 meet on Thursday, June 12. Both meets took place at the University of Manitoba. Thanks to Mr. Ryan Querel for coaching our students both during and after school
Our Grade 8 students will be closing out their experience at St. Emile School with a special graduation program and dinner on Wednesday, June 25 at St. Emile Parish. I know that the entire St. Emile School community wishes each Grade 8 “graduate” the very best as they journey forward on to new schools and exciting opportunities! The Grade 8 students will be back from their Ontario trip on June 20th. We know they are having the time of their lives! We wish them a safe journey home. Also away is the grade 5 class as they return from camping at Camp Arnes June 18th. Hope their weather was perfect!
A Year in Grade Two!
A busy and exciting year in Grade two is coming to an end. We’ve had a wonderful time with this very hard working group of students. There was never a shortage of volunteers, no matter what the task. Wonderful community helpers!! The class worked eagerly with spelling and new math concepts. They couldn’t wait to begin their research for their science projects. Every student did an amazing job with their written work and models! Handwriting was always a “yay’ activity and the students always placed pride and excitement into their art projects.
Our annual popcorn sale was once again generously supported and money raised was give to our Foster Child. Another exciting event for our class was the “birth” of our chicks. The students were able to watch chicks breaking through the egg and enjoy the sound of their peeps. A great learning experience!
I would like to thank all the parents who have volunteered in any way in class and on outings. A grateful thank you to all parents who dedicated time to reading, studying for spelling, signing agendas, any homework and getting hot lunch orders in. Your help and support has been greatly appreciated. I wish the Grade 2s and their families and all St. Emile families a safe and exciting summer!
Mrs. D. Spitula and her Grade Twos!
Mrs. Donna Burdey and the Grade Fives!
On Thursday, June 5th the grade 5 students attended the annual Cultural Diversity day at the Jonathan Toews Community Centre. This was an enlightening and educational day where we participated in many activities with a variety of schools in order to enhance our knowledge and tolerance of cultural diversity.
On June 18, the students returned from 2 days and 3 nights of camping fun and adventure! On May 23rd the grades 5 & 6 patrols went to Wheelies Roller-skating Rink! A good time was had by all! They did a great job of making our parking lot a safer place. It was a long cold winter and our patrols continued to patrol our students safely. Thank you patrols, for setting up all our pylons and ropes and taking them down at the end of the day!
It has been a fascinating year with a few interesting staff changes! As you may be aware, several staff members will be going on maternity leave next year. We are very pleased to announce the following staff changes for the 2014 – 2015 school year.
Mr. Paul Shawa has been selected to be the grade 7 teacher next year. Mr. Shawa has 5 years of middle school teaching experience and is a mathematics and science specialist. In addition, Mr. Shawa has a wealth of coaching experience and is looking forward to sharing his knowledge with St. Emile School.
Mr. Reald Guyot will be taking over the grade 7 class from May 12 to the end of the 2013 - 2014 school year. Mr. Guyot has many years of teaching experience and will ensure students finish the curriculum and are prepared for exams.
Ms. Christine Carter will be taking over the Kindergarten program next year. Ms. Carter has been the Pre-Kindergarten teacher here at St. Emile for the last two years. Her familiarity with her students and caring demeanour make her the perfect candidate for the Kindergarten program.
St. Emile School has found a lovely replacement for the Pre-Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Lisa Bova! Lisa is excited to be teaching the Pre-Ks as she has a passion for early childhood education. She is a recent graduate of the U. of Wpg., having come back from a year of teaching in Thailand where she was lucky to have taught the Manitoba curriculum to foreign students. Welcome Ms. Bova!
We are in the process of finding a replacement for Mr. Bill Quinn, as he has decided to retire this year! Thank you Mr. Quinn for all the musical joy you have brought to our school. We will miss you! Also retiring is Grade four teacher, Mrs. Jean Weselowski! Mrs. Weselowski will be dearly missed as she has been at St. Emile for 13 years! She has put 13 years worth of grade 4 students through our school! She has a grandchild that will keep her busy and will rest up in between visits we are sure! To all of you, Mrs. Weselowski says, “Live, Love and Laugh!” To replace these wonderful people is going to be a big job!
PS...Mrs. Remple had a little girl, Gabriella!
Our final celebration mass of the 2013-2014 school year takes place on Thursday, June 26th, 9:30 a.m., at the St. Emile Church. Parents, guardians, grandparents and friends of St. Emile School are all welcome to celebrate as a faith community together with students and staff! Following the celebration, students will return to their classrooms to pick up their report cards and belongings before being dismissed for summer vacation!
200 Club Bike-a-thon winners gather for a picture!
Guitar lessons ended up in concert for the Volunteer Celebration!
Mrs. Jean Weselowski and Mr. Brian Hargrave were handing out certificates, medals and ribbons today (June 19/14). This was to honor the Running Club and Track and Field participants
Note: See the tables at the back? Mrs. Weselowski made sure all celebrated with a pizza lunch!

Re: Reduced Speed Limits in School Zones
On July 4, 2012, the Executive Policy Committee of the City of Winnipeg, approved the guiding principles associated with signing reduced speed limits in school zones at relevant schools in Winnipeg.
Likely the new speed will be approved at 30 km/h - mostly to the adjacent to Regional Streets. Also, that reduced speed limits in school zones are in force Monday to Friday, 07:00 – 17:30, in the months of September to June.
We will keep you posted to any all updates on this matter as they arrive.
