Accelerated Reader Updates

Oct. 23 is the last day for students in our class to meet their first personal AR goal and be eligible to attend the Boom Science! program on Oct. 25. As of 10/12, these students have met and gone beyond their first goal: Santi, Mary, Finn, Gabe, Nevaeh, Kaila, Sawyer, Clara, Dylan, Caroline, Mabel, Wilder, Mallory, and Savannah.
Word Wizards (AR word count over 100,000): Mary, Finn, and Caroline.

On Oct. 11, your child received the special class passwords for both Scholastic News and Science Spin. These magazines are engaging sources of nonfiction for young readers, and support the Florida State Standards in three key content areas: Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.
Homework-Wk. of Oct. 16-20 (with standards)
Reading: Mon.-Thurs. nights-Students read from an appropriate-level, just right, good fit AR book for 20+ minutes and record the title in the AVID planner/agenda. (LAFS.2.RF.4.4.a)
Social Studies, Science, and Reading: Students read their current Scholastic News and complete page 4. They choose at least two paragraphs to practice oral reading fluency 2-3 times during the week. The Scholastic News is due on Fri. (LAFS.2.RF.4.4.b, LAFS.2.RI.4.10)

The class listened to the book The LittleOld Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, explored sensory words, and discussed the author’s use of onomatopoeia.
Bravo, Mabel!
On Sept. 29, Mabel accepted the challenge and flawlessly recited the following lines from the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”Mrs. Tucker invited her to be on the morning announcements, and again, Mabel delivered, speaking clearly and confidently to the KES viewing audience.
