NAVIANCE TRAINING NOTES FOR THE CLASS OF 2013

  1. To begin:
  1. Go to the following website:
  2. Your user name is your email address. Your password is whatever you registered last spring during sophomore Naviance training. If you don’t remember your password, you’ll need to have it reset.
  1. Features to focus on within your Home Page:
  1. What’s New:

-College representatives visit Benet in the fall to distribute information and address questions about their school. Check here to see when college representatives will be on campus.

-Check here for the most recent email reminders about upcoming college application deadlines, scholarship opportunities, informative programs, and other information regarding the college search and application process.

  1. From My School:

-Check your inbox and check it FREQUENTLY! If by chance, it’s been a few days since you’ve logged onto Naviance, you will find a complete listing of all the emails we’ve sent in your inbox.

-As questions arise, don’t hesitate to click on the “contact us” link. Your respective counselor’s email address will be at your fingertips.

  1. Features to focus on under the “Colleges” tab:
  1. Colleges I’m Thinking About:

-As you become interested in various colleges, this section of Naviance will provide you with a wealth of information about those specific colleges, and will also allow you to see how your academic criteria compares with the academic criteria preferred by those specific colleges.

-To add a specific college to your list of colleges in which you are interested, click on the “add colleges to this list” tab. Be sure to explore the various links located to the right of the college’s name, especially the “Graph” feature (described below under “Scattergrams”).

  1. College Match:

-The “College Match” feature on Naviance has analyzed applications from other students at Benet to find colleges that have accepted students with a GPA and test scores similar to your own. Once you have an official ACT score on file, this can be a particularly valuable tool when trying to find additional “Clear Admit” schools to consider.

  1. College Compare:

-This will allow you to compare various colleges to each other. By using this feature, you will be able to see the average accepted GPA’s and standardized test scores for multiple colleges at once AND you will be able to see how your specific academic criteria compares.

  1. College Search:

-The “College Search” feature of Naviance is a particularly helpful tool. If you have identified specific qualities that you’re looking for, the “College Search” tool will list the colleges that have those characteristics by walking you through a survey of questions.

  1. College Resources:

-For additional college search engines, or information about Financial Aid, Military, Test Prep, or College Athletics, see the helpful links provided within the “Resources” feature of Naviance.

f. Scattergrams: PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST HELPFUL FEATURES OF NAVIANCE!

- The Scattergram feature of Naviance (also referred to as “Graph”) allows you to see the outcomes of previous Benet applicants as they pertain to that particular institution. Your specific academic information will be plotted on the graph and circled in red; giving you great perspective on the likelihood of your acceptance/denial should you choose to apply to that particular school.

  1. Features to focus on under the “About Me” tab:
  1. Profile:

-Edit your personal profile at your convenience. Always remember to SAVE information you input by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking on the “Update” tab.

-By adding your parent’s personal information, they will be able to create their own account. Please allow them this opportunity so that they can view information on Naviance as it pertains specifically to you and your academic criteria.

-If you ever need to change your email address, you may do so here.

  1. Test Scores:

-As you take the ACT and/or SAT, your scores will be recorded in the “Test Score” section of Naviance as long as you list Benet Academy as a recipient of your score. Please keep in mind, scores will not be updated instantaneously. It often takes 4-6 weeks before Benet receives your scores then we have to manually input them into Naviance.

-Many college applications will ask you to provide your standardized test scores and the dates of the exams you took. The “Test Scores” section of Naviance is an excellent source of reference.

  1. Resume:

-We require every senior to have a resume on file within their Naviance Account. Virtually EVERY college application you complete will ask you about your extracurricular activities, honors received, work experience, leadership positions held, etc. The “Resume” section of Naviance is the PERFECT place to keep all your activities organized!
