General Objectives
The purpose of this component is to improve student achievement in mathematics by providing a better understanding of number sense, concepts, operations, and implement changes in teaching methods of teachers by incorporating manipulatives, technology, and literacy strategies into mathematics lessons. Upon successful completion of this component, participants will be able to differentiate instruction and increase the rigor and relevance in their mathematics program in the area of number sense, concepts and operations.
Specific Objectives
Upon completion of this component, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Florida state adopted standards for mathematics.
- Use manipulatives for concrete, tactile representations for understanding and problem-solving in mathematics activities related to number and operations.
- Use symbolic representations for real-world problem-solving in mathematics activities related to number and operations.
- Use problem-solving strategies to solve mathematics problems involving number and operations.
- Use literacy strategies to enhance mathematics understanding in mathematics activities related to number and operations.
- Read passages, identify the mathematics embedded in the passages and the related mathematics benchmarks, and solve mathematics problems related to the passages.
- Discuss differentiated instructional methods which can be used to enhance student achievement in number and operations.
- Incorporate the use of technology in activities involving number and operations.
Description of Activities
Activities conducted under this component will be designed to provide rigorous content training in order to accomplish the specific objectives outlined above. They will include, but not be limited to, such things as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, problem solving sessions, and question-and-answer time. The consultant(s) will use appropriate instructional technology and materials in order to teach the content most effectively. Whenever possible, training materials for this component will be provided for the participants.
Evaluation of Participants
Evaluation of the specific objectives will be determined by the activity leader or designee through analysis of student performance data affected by training activities, portfolios maintained by the training participant, documented observation by administrators, rubrics developed for special area curriculum, teacher-provided test results/grade books, or curriculum alignment data.
Evaluation of Activity
An online evaluation for this activity will be conducted through the Santa Rosa Professional Growth System.
