Title: Garden Center Assistant Departments:Garden Center, Birding,Pots, Cashier, Seeds & Bulbs

Reports to: Retail Manager Classification: Full Time

Description:

Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the inventory in the Garden Center Department of our Fleetwood store. Responsibilities include but not limited to, placing product orders, receiving, pricing and stocking inventory and merchandising and displaying product. Must proactively sell and maintain Garden Center product while providing excellent customer service.This is a permanent, full-time position which does require flexible hours and Saturday work.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Our customer service is first and foremost. This means approaching every customer with a smile and pleasant attitude, offering assistance as needed, answering questions politely, following up later if you don’t know the answer at first, always being presentable and doing all you can to provide Esbenshade’s customers with a positive, successful shopping experience so that they will want to return.
  2. Assist customers with garden related questions and recommendations.
  3. Learning the basics of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
  4. Stocking & ordering hardgoods in the department assigned to you.
  5. Assist customers with the handling of large or heavy items.
  6. Display a positive attitude at all times withemployees and communicates problems or concerns with management.
  7. Keep informed of weekly sales items and postings on our Web Page and E-Green News.
  8. Loading bulk mulch with bobcat and operating forklift as needed.
  9. Helping run register and helping at register area as needed.
  10. Loading product for customers as needed such as; mulch, topsoil, bagged stones and plant material as needed.
  11. Ability to manage inventory levels, monitor overstock and understock items and take action to correct them.
  12. Stocking, pricing and cleaning hard goods as needed.
  13. Maintain the receiving area that all productsare neatly put away and area is clean.
  14. Oversee quality control and cleanliness of your assigned areas.
  15. Help with various improvement projects in all departments as needed.
  16. Maintain a safe working and shopping environment at all times.
  17. Responsible for completing purchase orders and other paperwork in a timely manner.
  18. All other duties assigned by your supervisor or management personnel.
  19. Assisting in other departments during the off-season.
  20. Helping with inventory count throughout the seasons.
  21. Willingness to learn our in-house POS program.
  22. Willingness to work on average of two to three evenings per week in spring and Christmas season.
  23. Willingness to work Saturday during our peak spring season, Christmas season and events

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent which includes ability to competently read & write.
  • Strong background with retail, plants & foliage helpful.

Skills & abilities:

  • Ability to handle customer relations and employee interactions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and accomplish tasks independently.
  • Cheerful and helpful with customers, accommodating their needs.
  • Knowledge of plants names and basic care of plants.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed, weekends, nights and holidays.
  • Must be able to handle customers that may be hostile, handicapped, demanding, persistent, changeable, irresponsible and with low education.
  • Must be able to work under conditions with changing priorities, short deadlines and more than one source of work assignments. (In off-season).
  • Must be tolerant, tactful, cheerful, sincere, polite, honest, encouraging and accommodating.
  • Overall neat appearance and cheerful attitude.

Physical requirements:

  • Must be able to lift heavy objects. (Up to 40 lb. pounds).
  • Must be able to stand for long periods. (8 to 10 hours).
  • Must be able to work in dust, heat, high humidity, cool, chemical odors etc.
