Fox Chase Cancer Center Promotes Breast Care Navigation at Community HospitalsPartners Collaborate on Nurse Navigator Manual

PHILADELPHIA (March __, 2010)—From the time of cancer diagnosis—or even the discovery of an abnormal lump—nurse navigators help guide patients facing breast cancer through the continuum of care. Now, Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners has introduced a new resource to aid nursing professionals who are new to this role.

The “Breast Care Coordinators/Navigators Orientation Manual” is designed to help breast care coordinators and nurse navigators as they provide patient education, decision-making support, and overall coordination of care to breast cancer patients. The book features a module format to allow readers to focus on specific areas of interest quickly and easily. It covers a range of topics, including breast cancer treatment options, symptom management, clinical trials, high-risk programs, and survivorship. In addition, the manual highlights recently published research articles and Web sites as additional resources.

Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners established its Breast Care Coordinator/Navigator Program in 2004 with a core group of six coordinators. The program has since grown to include 20 professionals who help guide breast cancer patients throughout their care.

“Our breast care coordinators and nurse navigators possess an impressive wealth of expertise and knowledge, bringing together their collective experience to help guide patients through what can be a very difficult and overwhelming journey,” saysElaine Sein, R.N., B.S.N., O.C.N., C.B.C.N., senior project manager, Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners and coordinator, Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners Breast Care Coordinators/Navigators. “What’s even more extraordinary is their dedication and willingness to mentor each other and other nurses as they embark on this career path.”

Nurses from Fox Chase Cancer Center collaborated with Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners nurses to develop the manual’s content and provide editorial review. Funding for the manual’s publication was provided by the American Cancer Society through a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer grant.
