PEDRO VARANDAS CV

PEDRO VARANDAS is Clinical Director of “Casa de Saúde da Idanha” and “Clínica Psiquiátrica de São José”, two main Psychiatric Hospitals in Lisbon, accounting in total for 720 beds.

PEDRO VARANDAS is the current Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health (SPPSM), position held since November 2015. Between 2003 and 2015 was Secretary of SPPSM. Since 2004 has been the Secretary of the Psychopathology Section of EPA and from 2011 is the Secretary of the Clinical Psychopathology Section of WPA. From 2000 to 2006 was the Secretary of the Psychiatry College of the Portuguese Medical Association and within this time was the Portuguese Representative in UEMS Section of Psychiatry. In UEMS has developed intensive work in the meetings and working groups namely the working group that has produced the document “Profile of a Psychiatrist”.

PEDRO VARANDAS has finished is medical graduation in 1984 at Medical Faculty of Lisbon University where has also done the Psychiatry Training ended at 1991. From 1991 has developed a full degree psychiatric career among several hospitals in the region of Lisbon before assuming the Clinical Direction at “Instituto Irmãs Hospitaleiras”, the main psychiatric organization in Portugal who hold the Psychiatric Hospitals referred above.

For a long time has also worked in the field of Clinical Psychopharmacology as medical adviser for research of several pharmaceutical companies.

PEDRO VARANDAS has achieved and developed skills in clinical and general management after training in several post-graduate courses and a MBA in general management.

In education develops regular work as invited Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at University of Lisbon and for 3 years was the Professor of Clinical Psychopathology at Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon.

As an advocate has participated in several media communications and programs concerning human rights, stigma and mental health patient’s rights.

PEDRO VARANDAS is the author of 24 scientific and educational articles, 4 book chapter’s, more than 100 communications in Portugal and internationally and has collaborated in the Portuguese translation of DSM-IIIR and DSM-IV.

In scientific events organizations has participated in more than 30 organization commissions namely in the 17th European Congress of Psychiatry in Lisbon (EPA-2009).
