Program Objectives of the J-1 Student Internship
During the period of internship, the J-1 Student Intern will describe the goals that the student intern is expected to achieve while at Temple University.
Requirements for the J-1 Student Internship
The U.S. Department of State requires that your J-1 Student Internship fulfill the educational objectives for your current degree program at your home institution. It cannot serve to fill a labor need for Temple University and must exist solely to assist you in achieving the Program Objectives described above. The J-1 Student Internship must consist of work-based learning, rather than ordinary employment or unskilled labor. All tasks assigned must be necessary for the completion of the internship and may not consist of more than 20% clerical work. The internship must expose you to American techniques, methodologies, and technology; expand on your existing knowledge and skills; and not duplicate your prior experience. It cannot displace American workers, whether full- or part-time, temporary or permanent. Further, the internship must meet all requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), as shown at and the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act (MSPA), as found at
Please note that J-1 Student Interns are excluded from participation in any of the following activities:
- Unskilled or casual labor
- Child care or elder care
- Clinical positions or other work that involves patient care or contact, including any work that requires student interns to provide therapy, medication, or other clinical or medical care (e.g., dentistry, early childhood education, nursing, psychological counseling, speech therapy, social work, sports or physical therapy, or veterinary medicine)
- Aviation
- Any position, occupation, or business that could bring the Exchange Visitor Program or Temple University into notoriety or disrepute
Required Evaluations
Both the U.S. Department of State and Temple University require evaluation(s) to be completed prior to the conclusion of a student internship program. Both the J-1 Student Intern and the Faculty Mentor must sign the evaluation form(s). At a minimum, all programs require a concluding evaluation; programs that last longer than six months also require a midpoint evaluation. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services must receive the midpoint evaluation, if applicable, within two weeks of the midpoint date and the final evaluation within two weeks prior to your departure.
Benefits Awarded
The J-1 Student Internship does not carry any health or welfare benefits.
Performance of Service
Inthe performance of your functions as a J-1 Student Intern, you have an obligation to avoid ethical, legal, financial, and other conflicts of interest to ensure that your actions and outside activities do not conflict with your primary service responsibilities at the institution. Student interns are also expected to understand and be in compliance with applicable laws, as well as University and employment policies and regulations, including NCAA regulations when interacting with student athletes.
Policies and Procedures of Temple University
This J-1 Student Internship is subject to all policies and procedures of Temple University and its schools/colleges. Applicable policies may be examined in the Office of the Secretary or on Temple University’s policy website ( By signing and initialing each page of this letter, you agree to be bound by all policies and procedures including, but not limited to, Temple University’s Invention and Patent Policy and Guidelines for Research and Other Sponsored Activities. In addition, you hereby assign to Temple University any and all intellectual property rights in any inventions created by you during the period of your student internship and emerging from any university research or development activity, or from use of any university facilities or equipment. University policies are revised periodically, and you are responsible for adhering to the then-current version as maintained by the Office of the Secretary.
Compliance with Export Control Laws
It is the policy of Temple University to comply with U.S. export control laws. Export control laws restrict certain types of information, technologies, and commodities that can be transmitted overseas to entities and individuals, including U.S. citizens, or made available to foreign nationals on U.S. soil. By signing this letter, you agree that: (a) you will comply with any and all University export control, security, and access policies, procedures, and guidelines, as found on Temple University’s policy website ( and (b) you will not use or otherwise disclose the export controlled objects for any purpose other than the research or activity referenced herein.
Proof of Citizenship or Authorization to Provide Service in the United States
Federal law requires that all persons provide evidence of eligibility to participate in this student internship within three days of the program start date. Temple University requires that this eligibility documentation be provided in person at Temple University before engaging as a J-1 Student Intern at the University. If you are a citizen, lawful permanent resident, or non-resident alien, you must complete Form I-9. Required documentation may include copies of relevant immigration documents, your passport, the visa issued to you to participate in this activity, and your Form I-94/Departure Record verifying the status granted to you upon entry to the United States. If you are on a non-immigrant visa and begin participating in this student internship prior to your official start date, you may be considered to have violated your visa status. If applicable, all visa issues must be completed prior to your arrival at Temple University.
