Beginning (Basic)/Intermediate Coding I & II
Course Description:The focus of this class is learning the coding rules for the CPT, ICD-9-CM, and Level II (HCPCS) coding systems and then applying the rules to code patient services. In addition, a variety of payment systems is presented. The medical topics of Medicare fraud/abuse, HMOs and QIOs are also reviewed.
Personal Objectives:
Attend class sessions.
Prepare for class sessions.
Complete assignments in a timely manner.
Demonstrate a high level of responsibility.
Display respect for other members of the class.
Participate in class discussions.
Evaluation and Grading:
Evaluation is directly related to the performance objectives.
Performance is measured by examination, assignments, activities and/or quizzes.
Refer to instructor Wikispace to view letter grade/percentage scale.
Examinations:Are scheduled in advance. To qualify for the total points on the examinations the student must take the examination at the scheduled time. All exams are due on the assigned due date. No exceptions!
Homework:Each student will read the weekly assigned chapters, complete all even exercises in the textbook, homework handouts and any assigned activities as determined by the instructor.To qualify for the total points on the assignment, the student must submit the completed assignment at the scheduled time. Five points are deducted from each assignment that is not submitted at the scheduled time.
Methods of Instruction:The instructional methods used include: lecture, class discussion, assignments and class activities.
Class Structure: Class instruction and learning will be structured as follows:
First: Lecture will be given on assigned chapters.
Second: Classroom discussions or activities will be assigned to enforce concepts.
Third: Appropriate lab time will be given for completion of in-class assignments and activities.
Evolve: Assigned as an in-class activity or homework. Please see Navigating the Evolve Website on my Wikispace to get instructions on how to set-up an Evolve account. Every student must do this.
