RNIB Pears Centre bungalow tour - video transcript

Darren:

Hi, I'm Darren, I'm team leaderhere in Pears Court 5.

This unit is for childrenwith high health needs.

We have the office here, on to our left.

On the right we have our kitchen, and all the cabinets can be loweredso that when we have any young peoplethat are in wheelchairs, they can still get involved and take partin cooking and activities to do with that.

Next to it, we have the dining room.

All the young people will havetheir meals twice a day in the bungalow,so lunchtime and teatime, they all have it together as a group.

OK, I'll take you through nowto show you the lounge. This way.

This is the main lounge area, then, of Pears Court 5.

This is the communal lounge, so this iswhere all the young people come.

We do various nights, like DVDs nights.Young people from the differentbungalows will come over and visit.

Also, to the right here,we have the small lounge.

It's just a little, quieter loungefor any young personthat doesn't want to take any partin the activities. They can go in there.

Both this lounge and the small loungehave gardensthat come straight off them.

We've got the main garden there, and we've got a little patio area there.

If we go on now, I'll show you Max'sbedroom, introduce you to Max.

Right, this is Max.

And this is Max's room, here.

He gets to personalise itany way he likes.

He's got a big fascinationwith knights and castles, and like every 11-year-old, he loveshis PlayStation, so he'll sit there for...

Well, all day, if we give you the chance, wouldn't you, mate?

But, unfortunately,he has school and that to go to as well.

Each room comes accommodatedwith the slings at the top,so that we can safely hoist Maxto and from bed.

Max is one of six.

There are six rooms altogether.

Each two bedrooms sharea conjoining bathroom,so if I show you the bathroom...

Are you going to show everyonethe bathroom, Max?

After you, pal.

OK, so this is Max's bathroom.

It's a conjoining bathroom, whichhe shares with another young person.

Every bathroom comes with a showerand a bath.

Part of Max's life skills isto keep an eye onhow much deodorant and aftershaveand shower gels he has,and then he'll make a list each dayand then go to the shopsand purchase some for himself.

All the bathrooms come with the hoistsalready there, and so we are able to safely take Maxin and out of the bath, and it also works with the showeras well.
