POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the City Superintendent or Power Plant Foreman, the Power Plant Operator/Mechanic works in the City’s electrical generation facility. The employee in this position is responsible for maintaining continuous operation of the generating units in the plant, monitoring the City’s connection with other electric utility systems, and delivering the necessary electrical power to the City’s electrical system. He or she is expected to select the appropriate combination of prime movers and related auxiliary equipment to produce electrical energy. Also, he or she is expected to monitor equipment operations for any possible malfunctions and to take corrective action should a malfunction occur. He or she is also responsible for repair and maintenance of the power plant machinery and equipment. This is a non-exempt position under FLSA.
EXAMPLES OF WORK (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
*Start, operate, and stop dual-fuel internal combustion engines;
*Monitor gauges, meters, and dials; record information on data logs & forms;
*Operate switch boards to control voltage and distribution;
*Replace bearings, piston rings, injectors, & other precision machinist work;
*Change oil & filters, clean screens, lubricate machinery;
*Maintain & repair pumps, valves, air compressors, cooling towers, boiler;
*Maintain proper fuel and lube oil levels in machinery.;
*Clean & maintain equipment and plant;
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
*Operate hand tools;
*Operate radio & telephone communication equipment;
*Assist other city departments as the need arises.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience: Prior experience is not required. One to three years mechanics experience and at least six months experience in a power plant preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills after six months in the position.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Additional technical training is desirable.
Skills: Ability to operate diesel/natural gas engines, monitor and control electrical generators. Working knowledge of internal combustion engines, pumps, valves, and motors. Ability to operate various hydraulic and electric powered tools used in equipment maintenance. Ability to operate light equipment, small, motorized equipment, and hand tools. Ability to follow oral instructions, interpret written instructions and manuals. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Requires a valid Kansas Driver's License.
Problem Solving: Independent problem solving is involved in this position. Problems include circuit trips, and pump and motor malfunctions. Serious problems are reported to supervisor.
Decision Making: Independent decision making is involved in this position. Decisions include determining when to start generators and engines and how much load to carry. Employee follows directions of supervisors.
Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment, but does not participate in the annual budget process.
Supervision: Supervision is provided by the city superintendent or power plant foreman, and job decisions are reviewed.
Personal Relations: Occasional contact with the general public, and frequent contact with co-workers, and supervisory personnel is expected.
Working Conditions: Exposure to high levels of heat, noise, and vibration. Involves working with reciprocating piston engines and high voltage generators. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery. Afterhours and weekend emergencies are a factor in this position. Residency within the City of Lincoln Center is required. Personal telephone is required.
Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to see and read small gauges and take gauge measurements. The ability to express or exchange ideas by means of verbal and written communication. Requires physical exertion including bending and lifting miscellaneous items from 25 to 150 pounds, grasping controls, extensive walking, climbing stairs. Required to wear and use appropriate safety equipment.
