As you may be aware, the new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital and new RoyalHospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.

With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current RoyalHospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.

Gartnavel GeneralHospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.

These changes mean your base may change after joining us and you will be informed as soon as possible prior to any change of base.

This is a permanent full-time post based at InverclydeRoyalHospital. You will form part of the General Surgical Team providing surgical services within outpatient clinics, theatre lists and endoscopy; as well as providing on call general surgical cover for the hospital, participation in the out-of-hours rota will be required.

Applicants must be registered with the General Medical Council, possess a licence to practice and at least 4 Years full time Post Graduate Training, two of which must have been in relevant acute Surgical specialties with demonstrable progression of ability or be able to demonstrate and evidence equivalent experience and competencies, possession of MRCS or equivalent is desirable.

1.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the Largest NHS Employer in the UK and in partnership with 8 local authorities, is responsible for the health needs of a population of 1.2 million, almost a quarter of the entire Scottish population. The Acute Services Division is split into nine Directorates across 18 sites with a workforce of 27,500 and an annual budget of £1.2 billion. The geographical area covered is diverse; it covers the major city of Glasgow, large and small towns, villages and some rural areas. We have significant challenges ahead as we deliver the objectives set out in Better Health Better Care and we seek to ensure that we have the right people for the right posts delivering a comprehensive health service to the population of Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The Acute Services Division is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. This allows individuals a wide range of opportunities for professional development whether in community-based care or general and specialty hospital services.

A total of £4.3 million capital funding has been invested into InverclydeRoyalHospital in the last year. Patients will have a pleasant surprise when they come to the hospital following a £1 million refurbishment of the Accident and Emergency and an investment of £200,000 on the main entrance area. These improvements include new access routes for patients and enhanced patient waiting and reception areas.

The investment in Acute Services in Glasgow in the last ten years has been considerable with two new Ambulatory Care Hospitals opened in 2009. The opening of the new Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre (2008) and the temporary centralisation of a number of specialties including Renal and Vascular onto the Western Infirmary site was undertaken in anticipation of the development of the Southern General site.

A substantial volume of complex surgical work is performed in the Glasgow and Clyde units that provide a range of tertiary and national services. We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the £15 million, state of the art, WolfsonMedicalSchool based at GlasgowUniversity adjacent to the Western Infirmary site. Excellent education facilities are also provided at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with a full refurbishment of the UniversityTower completed in December 2013.

The hospitals north of the River Clyde, are Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including PrincessRoyalMaternityHospital), Western Infirmary, StobhillAmbulatoryCareHospital and Gartnavel GeneralHospital. Within Clyde sector the RoyalAlexandraHospital, InverclydeRoyalHospital and the Vale of Leven Hospital all provide acute surgical care with RAH and IRH also supporting unscheduled care.In south Glasgow the Southern General Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary alongside the new VictoriaHospital, providing ambulatory care, support the acute surgical patient.

2.0 INVERCLYDE ROYAL HOSPITAL (IRH) GREENOCK

InverclydeRoyalHospital is a modern district general hospital in Greenock, and serves the Inverclyde District (Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow), Largs, Fairlie, Millport, Skelmorlie, WemyssBay, Bute and the CowalPeninsula, a total population of 160,000. The hospital has 230 beds and was opened in 1979 and provides a range of services including in-patient beds, general medical and surgical specialties, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and Accident & Emergency. A GeriatricHospital opened in February 2001 and an 8 bed Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit opened in summer 2002. The hospital maintains close links with Glasgow’s three universities and makes a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The Hospital has a brand new state of the art Endoscopy Unit that was opened in June 2011 with full diagnostic and therapeutic facilities.

The Inverclyde area offers a range of good quality facilities. There is excellent residential accommodation available within both the town and surrounding villages. Inverclyde Council has made major investments in education over the last ten years and there are a number of newly built primary and secondary schools throughout the area which receive excellent achievement reports. There are also good quality private schools within the town, in Kilmacolm and Glasgow. The award winning Beacon Arts Centre has been opened in the last year and offers a good program of cultural events. The Firth of Clyde is thought by many to offer the best in-shore sailing in the British Isles. There are several good quality Golf courses and clubs in the area. The town of Greenock has a modern shopping centre. Greenock, Gourock and the surrounding towns and villages have a wide range of good bars and restaurants. The Waterfront Centre offers swimming pools for bothleisure and training, fitness and gym facilities and an ice rink used for skating and curling. The newly renovated Gourock swimming pool and fitness centre offers the only out-door, heated sea water pool in Scotland.

Greenock is situated amid superb coastal and mountain scenery and the West of Scotland’s jewels are within easy reach, Loch Lomond is just 45 minutes drive, a little further to the Argyll peninsula – or over the sea to Arran, Skye, Iona and Mull.

There are excellent transport links with swift motorway access to Glasgow within 40 minutes, a fast regular rail service and GlasgowAirport is only 35 minutes away by road.

3.0DEPARTMENT INFORMATION AND SCOPE OF POST

There are currently 5 consultant general surgical posts within the IRH and 11 at RAH. The consultants work across the sites covering the major sub-specialities of Upper GI, Breast and Colorectal. Mr Reidy provides an on site vascular assessment and investigation service for scheduled patients at Inverclyde with close integration with the regional service in Glasgow. Each sub-specialty employs a team approach with close links to the regional Managed Clinical Networks. Fully staffed Intensive Care, High Dependency and Palliative Care beds are well utilised. Clinical Nurse Specialists are valued members of the teams.

4.0 THE POST

Title:Speciality Doctor in General Surgery

4.1 DUTIES OF THE POST

This post is for a Specialty Doctor in General Surgery and will be based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital where they will form part of the General Surgical Team delivering surgical services within outpatient clinics, theatre and endoscopy lists; as well as providing on call general surgical cover for the hospital.

The successful applicant will be a valued member of the team. Although this is not a

training post, the post holder will be expected to develop their role and during the

initial year a designated Consultant will provide guidance, supervision and will advise

on suitable CPD and associated learning opportunities. If the post holder is interested

in pursuing a CESR certification, this would be supported by the General Surgical

Team who have successful record in supporting colleagues to achieve certification.

NHS Education for Scotland working in conjunction with NHS Boards throughout Scotland have appointed SAS Educational Adviser to each Health Board area to promote the educational and training opportunities available to SAS doctors and dentists. The postholder would be introduced to the local Educational Advisers and provided with detail of the SAS Educational network.

5.0 TEACHING AND TRAINING

The department has an excellent record in training medical students, specialist nurses and other health practitioners, the appointee will be expected to assist with the delivery of the department’s teaching programme and to maintain the high standards achieved to date. All departments are committed to continuing education and training of all staff and encourage active participation in clinical governance. One session per week will be dedicated to further education, teaching and audit.

5.1 CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION AND APPRAISAL

The appointee will participate in the educational activities within the department to ensure appropriate personal CME is achieved for appraisal and revalidation.

6.0 RESEARCH AND AUDIT

To carry out appropriate research and actively participate in audit and clinical governance activities in the directorate as required.

SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
