Scope

Woorabinda Pastoral Companyoperates six highly productive grazing and mixed farming properties in Central Queensland. An experienced Manager is required to manage the operations across these properties in consultation with appointed advisors.

Background

Woorabinda is an Aboriginal Community, whose major commercial operation is the Woorabinda Pastoral Company (WPC) which is controlled by the Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council (WASC). As WPC is controlled and owned by the WASC, it has a profound responsibility under the DOGIT (Deed of Grant in Trust) to meaningfully and responsibly provide beneficial economic and social outcomes to the community. The properties were granted under the DOGIT to WASC in 1986 and the company, WPC, was formed in 1990 to provide governance and management of the pastoral holdings. All properties on the DOGIT have a zero alcohol policy.

Role Scope

  • Understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal Culture

Principal responsibilities of this role

  • A good understanding of grazing management practices and farming operations
  • An understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and an ability to work sensitively with the local people and board of director’s
  • Proven animal husbandry skills and farming operations
  • Provide leadership and management to a team of staff and contractors
  • Implementing across the operation Workplace Health and Safety plans and staff inductions
  • Provide quality advice to the Pastoral Company Board of Directors on the further direction of the Woorabinda Pastoral Company’s operations
  • Co-ordinate and deliver appropriate management practices.
  • Coordinate stakeholder interface with the Pastoral Company Directors
  • Work with government and non-government agencies
  • Prepare submissions, reports and briefs for monthly reporting.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the good governance
  • Ensure appropriate systems, processes, networks and relationships are established to enable the better future of the pastoral operations.
  • Maximise employment and training opportunities for local aboriginal people
  • Develop, implement and monitor employment and training plans
  • Provide direction and project management expertise
  • Provide input into the policies and processes ( local government act)
  • Access appropriate government funding and resources to provide greater employment and training opportunities and economic development with the aboriginal Communities
  • The ability to communicate effectively with your team
  • High-level drive and ambition
  • Sound computer skills
  • Working knowledge of book keeping practices and managing a budget and operational plan

Working relationships in this Role

This position reports to the Woorabinda Pastoral Company Board of Directors.

Additional Information

It is a recommended that the successful applicant can provide an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who is recognised and accepted in the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community as a referee.

How will you be assessed for this Role?

Your suitability for this role will be assessed against these demonstrated abilities, so please include responses to these in your application:

  1. Minimum of 5 years experience in a similar role
  2. Demonstrated ability to manage and retain staff and contractors
  3. Demonstrated experience reporting and being accountable to a Board/senior manager/property owner (formal & informal)
  4. Competent in all aspects of operating, developing and maintaining an extensive cattle grazing property (mustering on horse and motor bike, branding, cattle handling, water infrastructure etc etc)
  5. Demonstrated ability to collect and maintain accurate stock and crop records and manage operational budgets
  6. Competent and demonstrated ability to manage cropping enterprise
