Crisis intervention is a small segment of time in which staff members must intervene with another person to address behavior that may escalate into disruptive or even violent incidents. The goal of staff is to intervene in a way that provides for the care, welfare, safety and security of all who are involved in a crisis situation.

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® is designed to provide participants with basic skills in crisis management.
  • Participants should emerge from Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training with an awareness of crisis management skills and an ability to perform them at a rudimentary level.
  • Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention is a set of safe non-harmful restraints used as a last resort to assist an individual in regaining control of self.
  • Participants will learn keys to setting limits.
  • Participants will learn to recognize patterns of anxiety that may escalate into a crisis situation and the appropriate means to address those patterns.
  • Participants will learn the importance of positioning to ensure safety, respect and non-threatening interaction with students.
  • Participants will learn control dynamics in order to maintain the best care, safety, welfare, and security of all involved in a crisis situation.
  • Participants will learn to identify precipitating factors to a crisis situation.
  • Participants will learn the necessity of establishing therapeutic rapport after the onset of a crisis, whether verbal or physical.
  • Participants will learn team roles and the importance of functioning as a team during a crisis situation.

Though this is not a course in self-defense, all participants are asked to dress in comfortable clothing such as jeans and t-shirts or exercise clothing since there will be physical action during some phases of the training. Participants should wear flat, closed-toe/heel shoes with non-skid soles (i.e. tennis shoes/sneakers, no slides/sandals please). Please note that participants arriving late or inappropriately dressed may be asked to attend a different session.

In order to receive certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®, participants mustattend the full one day session and pass a post-test. Attendees will also receive CLUs for completion of this training.

Refresher courses are offered to individuals who were previously trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®. However, recertification courses must be obtained within twelve months of the original certification.

Space is limited, so register early (at least 20 days prior to the scheduled training). Please remember to attach a completed registration form to your completed professional leave form.
