On SaturdayAugust 1, 2015at 10:30 a.m., the Governor’s Civil War Commemoration Task Force,Carver County Historical and Scandia Baptist Cemetery Assn will host a remembrance event honoring Carver County’s Andrew Matson: Sergeant in the NinthMinnesota Infantry, Company H. Sergeant Matson was one of two Minnesota soldiers hospitalized at the time of their release from the infamous Andersonville Prison who came home and died almost immediately. Some 116 Ninth Minnesota Regiment men died in prison. This represents the highest total of men of any infantry regiment serving in the Civil War’s Western Theater. Of the 2,926 Union units serving in the Civil War only 18 exceed the Ninth in the number of POW deaths. The event will include dedication ceremonies of a new grave marker, and presentations by state and local dignitaries, speaking on the Ninth Minnesota, Andersonville Prison and Srg. Matson. This eventis part of sesquicentennialceremonies to commemorate and remember the participation of all Minnesota Civil War soldiers by honoring the memories of those like Sgt.Matson; those who were killed, mortally wounded or who died as POWs during the War and are buried in Minnesota.

The event will be held rain or shine at theScandia Baptist Cemetery in Waconia and is open to the public. The cemetery is located next to the Island View Golf Club, 7795 Laketown Pkwy, Waconia, MN. 55387. If coming from the east, Hwy 5 is currently closed between Victoria and Waconia. The best alternative is to take Hwy 7 out to St. Bonifacius and then go south on County Road 92/30 to Waconia. This goes right past the golf course and Cemetery.
