EDU 221 Introduction to Teacher Education

Diversity PowerPoint Presentation Fall 2005

Points: 70 and 10 for group participation (Total 80pts)

Assigned: October 17th

Presentations November 9th and 14th

Groups of 3 or 4

Each group will be assigned (draw out of a hat) one of the following cultures:

1.  Chinese

2.  Vietnamese

3.  Hispanic

4.  Black/African American

5.  Middle Eastern

6.  Native American

7.  Russian

Requirements for the PowerPoint (15 minutes MAXIMUM) will include:

You MUST include these 5 categories

1.  Geographical concentration in the U.S. (there may be more than one) Use the U.S. census 2000

2.  Language (s) spoken by the people

3.  Educational expectations of the culture

4.  Educational difficulties encountered because of their culture

5.  How a teacher can use their knowledge of the culture and apply it to classroom applications of culture knowledge

You must include at least ONE of the following categories:

6.  Positive influences because of the culture expectations

7.  Reasons for coming to the US

8.  Ethnic celebrations of the culture (and possible ramifications for the classroom)

Effects:

·  Minimum of 8 slides, including:

o  a title slide (including names of participants)

o  bibliography slide – no less than 5 sources (2 MUST NOT be the Internet)

o  A separate slide for each of the required categories (#1-5) and one for the optional category (#6-8) See above categories.

o  The use of APPROPRIATE graphics is HIGHLY encouraged and expected.

o  The presentation does not have to have a lot of “bells and whistles”

o  If needed, ask for technical help from the instructor

o  The slide show will be graded using a Rubric.
