Purpose of the course: This elective level course explores the role of the individual and the individual’s relationship with society. Content focuses around topics that include learning, memory, gender roles, personality, social interaction, deviance, and human development. Class discussions, observations, and analysis are integral aspects of this course. Student synopsis of available psychological literature may be required. A major project is also required. This course is offered to students in Grades 11 and 12.

REQUIRMENTS:

1: Observation Tasks

Several times during the semester, students will conduct observations of behavior to further expand and analysis the content material discussed in class. The observation and resulting analysis allows the student to practice the nature of psychological understanding of behavior. Students will report their findings and interpretations in an observation task protocol format. These assignments are the basic foundations of the application of the content material learned over the semester.

2: Major Project

At the conclusion of the semester, students will be expected to complete a movie analysis project. This project will allow students to demonstrate their understanding of content principles and theories by conducting an analysis and comparison of two selected movies. Analysis will consist of proficient application of content theories and concepts in relation to observed behavior of characters and scenes.

3: Class Participation

Much of what this course becomes depends on you, how well prepared you are, how well you participate in class discussion, and how well you learn from each other.

4: Major Course Assessments

There will be one Major Course Assessment per quarter. These assessments will count for 25% of the overall quarter grade. Students must receive a score of 70 or higher to pass the assessments. Students may revise major course assessments as instructed by the district policy.

5: Homework Policy

Homework is defined as short-term written work assigned by a teacher designed to provide students with opportunities to reinforce, practice and apply previous learning. Homework is due the next class meeting. Students are expected to complete homework on time to receive full credit. Late homework will only be accepted the next calendar day for a maximum grade of a 70, beyond that time no credit will be earned. Late homework must be date stamped by the main office and submitted to the teacher’s mailbox.
