Tracy High School: Agricultural/Scientific Academy: ADMISSION FOR FALL 2010

The Academy has an enrollment cap of 95 students each year.

Required Application Information: APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED COMPLETE UNTIL ALL ITEMS DESCRIBED BELOW ARE SUBMITTED TO THE AG/SCIENCE ACADEMY OFFICE, THS, ROOM 207.

A COMPLETED APPLICATION SUBMITTED ON TIME DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:

Please submit the following to the Academies Office:
1.  This year’s application: Part 1 - Student Information: PLEASE SPECIFY (CIRCLE) SCIENCE CLASS
2.  Part 2 - CORE Teacher Recommendation, completed. Teacher recommendation must be submitted in a sealed envelope with the teacher’s signature across the seal.
3.  Application essay, (see instructions below)
4.  A sample of a graded writing assignment, an essay or paragraph, graded by a current English or Social Studies teacher NO BOOK REPORTS.
5.  A copy of your Middle School Transcript or Report Cards, Grades 6-8 (most current)
DO NOT SUBMIT ANY OTHER MATERIALS THAN THOSE REQUESTED. PLEASE, NO PLASTIC REPORT COVERS.

SELECTION PROCESS: All applications that meet the minimum requirements, a fully completed application with requested materials, a score of 70% on the application essay, and a 70% average on the teacher recommendation, are placed in a pool from which students will be selected randomly for acceptance.

INTRA –DISTRICT TRANSFERS: There are a limited number of intra-district spots available. All applications from students outside of the THS boundary will be placed in a separate pool and will also be subject to a random selection process.

ROUND 1 / ROUND 2: PENDING SPACE AVAILABILITY
All completed qualifying applications received by 2/26/10, 4:00 PM, will be randomly assigned a number and placed in a pool from which students will be selected randomly for acceptance. Notification of acceptance or rejection for ROUND 1 will be mailed by April 1, 2010. / If there are any remaining seats after ROUND 1, qualifying applications received after 3/1/10, will be randomly drawn and assigned the remaining numbers. Notification of acceptance or rejection for ROUND 2 will be mailed after 5/1/10.
IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM, YOU ARE COMMITTED TO THE PROGRAM FOR 1 YEAR, YOU MAY NOT WITHDRAW YOUR ACCEPTANCE.

APPLICATION ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS:

Autobiographical Narrative. Narrative must earn a 70% or better on the enclosed rubric.

TASK: In a five paragraph essay, write about a time that you overcame a challenge or obstacle in your life. What skills did you use to overcome the challenge? Why didn’t you give up? What did you learn about yourself from this experience?

Framework to follow:

Introduction:

*Start with an interesting opener

*Provide necessary background information

*Hint at the significance of the experience

Body:

*Organize events so that they are easy to follow

*Include details about people, places, thoughts, and feelings

*use descriptive language and precise action verbs

Conclusion:

*Reflect on what the experience meant to you

*End with a direct statement of the significance of the experience
