What is IB Survey Literature?

Survey Literature is a course designed for incoming ninth graders to acquire the skills and literary background they will use and build on in future English classes at Curie. This section of Survey Literature is part of Curie’s pre-IB program. This means that the class work you complete this year is designed to prepare you for the IB Diploma program. Since IB is such a demanding program, it is vitally important for you to be successful in this class both semesters because what you learn this year, you will need to know next year, and so on until you graduate.

The following units of study will be covered in IB Survey Literature: (subject to change as year progresses)

First Quarter (ending Nov. 12, 2004) / 1ST AND 2ND QUARTER DETERMINE YOUR FIRST SEMESTER GRADE.
·  Stylized Narrative Writing Unit
o  Descriptive Writing and Character Sketches (reading will probably include excerpts from The House on Mango Street and There Are No Children Here)
o  The Hero, the Hero’s Journey, and Plot-Driven Narratives (intro to archetypes)
·  The Odyssey (parts) and Research Project on the Greek Gods
·  Independent Reading: Mango Street or There Are No Children Here (first 6 weeks) and then (re)reading The Giver or 1984 (next 6 weeks)
Second Quarter (ending Jan. 28, 2005)
·  Brave New World (to begin after conclusion of narrative/Odyssey unit)
·  The Tragic Hero and the Outcast (archetypes)
·  Argumentative Writing Unit (part 1)
Third Quarter (ending April 15, 2005) / 3RD AND 4TH QUARTER DETERMINE YOUR SECOND SEMESTER GRADE.
·  Mock Trial
·  Argumentative Writing (part 2): Unreliable Narrator Unit
·  Independent Reading Project: The Catcher in the Rye
·  Hero versus Anti-Hero (archtypes)
Fourth Quarter (ending June 16, 2005)
·  POETRY! Unit
·  Othello (tragic hero, anti-hero, outcast)
