Setting up your Role Play Area
Topic: Once Upon a Time Role Play Area: A hut in the forest
This Topic is about People, Places, Animals and Things. The children familiarise themselves with some traditional fairytales and use these as a stimulus for creative and imaginative activities. Creating a hut in the forest will allow the children to act out various fairy tale scenes and to use their imagination to create new or extended endings.
· Create the front of a wooden hut from painted cardboard and include an opening door and a curtained window. Coloured cardboard candy sticks and iced gingerbread can be blu-tacked to the hut for Hansel and Gretel scenes.
· Inside the hut, provide a table with a cloth and some crockery, a bed (using cushions on the floor, plus a cover), 3 chairs, an oven and a large cage made from a painted cardboard boxes.
· Provide costume props, e.g. a bonnet, an apron, a shawl, a headscarf, a cap, a waistcoat, a green jacket, some wigs made in Session 4 of Theme 4, an axe made from cardboard, a basket with a serviette to cover the contents, a broomstick, a bunch of artificial flowers, a small stick to mimic Hansel’s finger.
· Provide some opening dialogue cards for each character, e.g.
Little Red Riding Hood: “Oh grandmamma, I’ve had such a lovely walk through the woods. And you’ll never guess what I saw… (Describe the animals you saw, what they were doing and your meeting with the helpful wolf)
The woodcutter: “Well, that’s the end of the wolf! But it wasn’t easy, I tell you…” (Explain how you caught and killed the wolf)
Witch: “Hello, my dears, you look as though you haven’t eaten for days! It just so happens I have …” (List all the yummy foods you have made – make it as mouth-watering as possible!)
Gretel: “Don’t worry, Hansel, I have a plan … (Explain the plan)

Some ideas to encourage Speaking and Listening in your role Play Area
Topic: Once Upon a Time Role Play Area: A hut in the forest
Remind the children of the storylines of the various fairytales and of the key characters. Discuss with the children which fairy tale scenes could take place in a hut in the forest. Explain that they can act out the fairy tales according to the traditional story lines, but could also extemporise on the stories and either alter the endings or extend these.
Possible role-play scenarios:
· Hansel & Gretel – Gretel tries to persuade Hansel not to go near the stranger in the gingerbread house. Hansel argues that they are hungry and tired. The witch entices them.
- Gretel comforts the imprisoned and despairing Hansel and tells him about her plan (in between carrying out the many tasks the witch orders her to do).
- The children befriend the witch and persuade her to help them to punish their stepmother.
