Room 122 Procedures

Procedures are designed to help you and the class run more efficiently. We will practice many of these procedures during the first week of school.

______

Entering the Classroom

  • Enter the classroom quietly and calmly.
  • Find your (number) seat and immediately start working on the Bell Ringer.

Bell Ringers

  • Every morning there will be a bell ringer assignment on the board, overhead, or your desk.
  • As you arrive please begin working on these assignments immediately.

Being Tardy (late) to Class Without an Excuse

  • A student will be marked tardy if they do not have an excuse.
  • If a student is consistently tardy, an action plan will be enacted.
  • If the student fails to follow an action plan, the student will be responsible for making up time at the expense of their free time (examples: before/ after school, lunch, etc. )
  • If tardy, quietly enter the room and find your seat. DO NOT announce your arrival, or cause a scene.

Quieting the Class

Any of the following may be done if the teacher needs the class’s attention:

  • The teacher will ask, “Ladies and gentlemen may I have your attention, please?’
  • The teacher will say, “All right; stop!” The students should respond, “Collaborate and listen.”
  • Give Me Five- the teacher will hold 5 fingers silently in the air. When students see the hand raised they are to do the following:
  • 1. Eyes on the speaker
  • 2. Quiet
  • 3. Be still
  • 4. Hands free( put things down)
  • 5. Listen
  • As the year progresses, quieting techniques may evolve or change.

Addressing the Whole Class

  • While Mr. Marchetti is speaking to the whole class, there should be no talking.
  • Mr. Marchetti will ask for questions when he is finished talking. If you have a question, raise your hand once he is finished.
  • If you are afraid of forgetting what you have to say, write it down in your notebook. Mr. Marchetti will collect and answer it when appropriate.

Class Discussions

  • There will be at least one weekly class discussion about a topic related to the material.
  • Rules are as follows
  • No talking while someone else is talking
  • Mr. Marchetti or an assigned student facilitates
  • Desks must be clear of any other assignments
  • Do not coast or dominate

Individual Class Work

  • Students will be required to work on assignments individually during class throughout the year.
  • During this time, students are to work silently at their seats.
  • If a student needs something, they are to follow the silent 5 finger request
  • Raise 1 finger ( not the middle one) if you need help or have a question
  • Raise 2 fingers if you need to use the rest room

*Students may use the restroom once per week

* The student will need to have their planners signed by Mr. Marchetti to leave the room.

  • Mr. Marchetti will respond with 3 fingers if he is on his way over, or if it is ok to use the bathroom
  • If it is not the best time to answer the request, Mr. Marchetti will put up 5 fingers
  • If Mr. Marchetti is working with somebody else, do not expect him to come to you
  • If your finger is up, you are still expected to work

Group Work

  • Each student will be given a number at the start of the year
  • Groups are formed based on your number
  • Groups may be randomized or intentionally constructed.
  • Group rules are as follows:
  • Stay on topic
  • Control your voice volume
  • Do not coast or dominate

Going Outside of the Room

  • If you need to go to the office, counselor, or library, raise one finger ( again not the middle one) and Mr. Marchetti will be over to help you, or let you know that it is not a good time.
  • If it is a good time, he will give you an office or guidance pass.
  • Make sure to come back with the pass signed.

If You Need a New Pencil ,Paper, or Any Materials

  • If you are in need of a writing utensil, pencils are loaned for one point. If the pencil is returned, there are no points lost; however, if the pencil does not return a point will be taken away from your grand total.
  • It is preferred that all materials are gathered before class as you enter. It is inevitable that at some point you may have to get something from the front of the room. If you need anything ,don’t make a big production out of it. Wait for a time when Mr. Marchetti ,or another student is not talking to the class. At that point, quietly go get what you need.

Knowing What to Do

  • Mr. Marchetti will let you know what you are responsible for doing.
  • If you forget, there will be objectives and an overview of “what to do” posted in the front of the room.
  • Directions can typically be found at the top of a page and will be in a different font.
  • If you are really confused, don’t be afraid to ask by putting up one finger ( not the middle one of course). Remember this is the signal if you need assistance.

When You Finish Early

  • Posted at the front of the room is a list of things to do once you are finished.
  • In general, it is wise to bring a reading book. When in doubt of what to do, read silently.

Transitions between Activities

  • Mr. Marchetti will give a warning when the activity is about to end ( usually around 2-5 minutes)
  • Mr. Marchetti will state, “When I say change, I would like you to . . . .”
  • Mr. Marchetti will then give the directions on what to do next. For example, get out your books and turn to page . . . If you forget the page number, it will be on the board.
  • When transition time begins, do not talk during transition time.

Where to Find Homework

  • The homework board is in the front of the room.
  • A monthly calendar will be available upon request for those who like to plan ahead
  • Assignments can be found online

Passing in Papers/ Homework

  • When asked to turn in papers, get them out quietly and pass them to your left.
  • There is a homework bin with a period number by the computer in the back. Please put any due papers in the bin.

Putting Your Name on Papers

  • Your name, the date, and your class period must be recorded on all papers.
  • If any of these are missing from the page, there will be a penalty of 1/3 a letter grade. Example: A “B” will become a “B-“

Closing Message

  • There will be a closing activity/ summary everyday to review what was taught and evaluate understanding.
  • Directions for each exit slip will be discussed as needed

Dismissal

  • The bell does not dismiss you, Mr. Marchetti does.

What to Do When You Are Absent

  • Make sure you get your absence card into your homeroom teacher.
  • Missed assignments are due 1 week after they were originally assigned. For example, if you miss Tuesday, it is due the next Tuesday. Exceptions to this may occur.
  • It is your responsibility to receive missed assignments.

When a Visitor Comes to the Room

  • Act in a respectful manner as usual.
  • Follow all rules as described in the discipline plan.
  • Mr. Marchetti will usually give a warning if there is an expected visitor.

When thereis a School Wide Announcement over the Intercom

  • Stop what you are doing and listen quietly to the announcement.

Communicating with Parents and Guardians

  • Mr. Marchetti will contact parents and guardians on a regular basis. This may be in the form of a letter or phone call.
  • Do not fret, not every phone call is negative.

In the Event of an Emergency

  • These procedures will be reviewed in class.
  • It is very important that you remain quiet and calm in the event of an emergency.

Communication with Mr. Marchetti

  • You may e-mail him at .
  • E-mail is checked in the morning before school, during lunch, and immediately after school.
