Explanation of how people get Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) 3/17

For the past fifteen years, the Center for Community Futures was authorized to issue Continuing Education Units by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). We sent in all of our curriculum descriptions and materials and faculty bios. We paid a fee to the BBS every three year, and they certified the Center for Community Futures as a CEU provider (#1848). We issued the CEU’s in hourly increments. We charged $25 per class to collect the evaluations and sign-in sheets, and issue the certificates keep the records for seven years. For reasons that are unclear, the legislature stopped the BBS from approving CEU providers.

Organizations that can issue CEU’s include the California State University, the CA chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and a few other professional associations (nurses). Since we have 21 hours of classes approved for academic credit from CSU, we thought that it would be the way to go for CEUs.

We sent all our materials in, and on March 9, 2017, received approval from the California State University for CEUs to be issued for people who attend the Summer Institute for Management. The difference is that we do not issue the CEUs. Cal State University does. There are other differences. For each ten hours of class time, CSU will issue one CEU. So, attendance at the Summer Institute for Management which is 24 hours, will produce two CEUs. We will provide an explanation and conversion chart for those whose professional bodies or agencies want the hours of class time. Another difference is that people who want CEUs must fill out the CSU application form. This is the same form that a person would use to apply for academic credit. Only the course number is different.

And the last difference is that instead of you giving me $25 in cash or a check, you must write a check to California State University for $178. Then I take your applications and checks, bundle them with the rest of the paperwork and send it all to CSU. CSU creates a student record for you and a transcript that shows yourCEUs. (I will tell those who do this how to view and download their transcripts.)

We will also continue to offer college credit for the Management Institute from CSU for those who want that instead. It is course number EPSY 7374. And we continue to provide college credit for the Basic Skills courses, HDEV 7400, 7401, 7402 and 7403.
