DRIVING ROUTE 1

1)  From Sylmar rideshare point go north on I-5 to Hwy 99.

2)  Go north 24.5 miles on Hwy 99 to Hwy 58.

3)  Go east 7.1 miles on Hwy 58 to Weedpatch Hwy (SR184).

4)  Go 4.3 miles north on SR 184 to Hwy 178. Please note: Hwy 184 goes right (east) at a stop sign 1.7 miles from Hwy 58.

5)  Go 33.5 miles east on Hwy 178 to the intersection of 178 and 155. This road is scenic as it follows the Kern River, but is very winding.

6)  Alternatively, you can reach the intersection of 178 and 155 from Walker Pass (please refer to your AAA map). This route is about 20 miles longer from Sylmar, but the road is not as winding and those traveling from the east might find it shorter.

7)  From the intersection of SR 178 and SR 155 in the town of Lake Isabella, go north on SR 155 for 7.0 miles to where SR 155 turns left in the town of Wofford Heights. Continue straight 4.8 miles on Kernville Rd crossing the Kern River Bridge in Kernville.

8)  Turn north (left) on Sierra Way (Mtn Hwy 99) and go north along the Kern River about 20 miles to the Sherman Pass Road (22S05) on the right. Turn right (east). Note your odometer and go as follows (the most obvious road is generally the correct route):

9)  At 6.1 miles, fork with a sign ‘Big Meadows’. Turn right (south) on 22S12 (Cherry Hill Road).

10)  Follow this road to Big Meadow.

11)  Then follow signs to Cannel Meadow.

12)  Then follow signs to Pine Flat

13)  At 29.4 miles, Pine Flat. You have three choices: “24S12B” goes to the left, “24S12C” is the middle fork, and “24S12” is the right fork and the main road. The middle fork takes you to the hiking route one trailhead. Once on “24S12C” you can drive about 0.5 mile. Park Here. The road is overgrown beyond that point.

14)  If the road 24S12C is blocked you can continue straight on 24S12 for about ½ mile.

15)  Turn left where the road splits at the intersection of Cannel Meadows Trail and 24S12D. Continue on this road for about ½ mile to a wide area. Park here.

Road conditions for this route can be checked by calling the Cannel Meadows Ranger District at 760-376-3781.

HIKING ROUTE 1

1)  From either parking area, hike south up the slope to the top of the ridge.

2)  Turn left and follow the ridge to the summit area. There is a class 2 route on the southeast side of the summit block which can reached by going around the summit rocks clockwise. There is a low class 3 route on the northeast side.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

The dirt road south from the Sherman Pass road is seasonal. The road reaches an altitude of over 8,100 feet and commonly gets snow between November and May.

DRIVING ROUTE 2

1)  From the intersection of Kernville Road and Sierra Way in Kernville (see route 1), turn left (north) on Sierra Way.

2)  Drive north on Sierra Way for 1.5 miles to a parking area on your right. Park here.

HIKING ROUTE 2

1)  From the parking area hike up Cannel Meadows Recreational Trail (33E22) for about ten miles until you reach Pine Flats.

2)  From there go east on the road at the intersection of Cannel Meadows Trail and 24S12D for about ½ mile.

3)  Then follow route one directions to the top.

TRIP PLANNING

1)  The drive from Sylmar is about 2.5 hours to Kernville. From Kernville to the parking area for route one is about another two hours of driving.

2)  Many groups climb all of the peaks in the area in a two or three day trip. They usually do Bohna and Sunday the first day. Split and Black the second and Cannel Point the third day.

3)  There are many good car camping spots (e.g. Black Mtn Saddle) and motels in Wofford Heights and Kernville.

PEAK NAME ORIGINS

By Mr. Louis Quirarte

From Louis Quirarte: Named after local pioneer sheepman Arthur Cannell. He frequented this area, but lived along the South fork of the Kern River during the 1890’s. The name was misspelled on the benchmark from which the HPS use name is derived. There is a nearby Cannell Peak, and Cannell Meadow. Peak was added to the HPS Peak List in 1971.

According to the late J. C. Jenkins, this point is also called Point Lovely Rogers. Lovely Rogers was a prospector who discovered wealth in the Greenhorn Mountains. He was a half-breed Cherokee Indian from Arkansas.

Please report any corrections or changes to the Mountain Records Chair.
