SUMMER STAFF JOB DESCRIPTION

HORSE WRANGLER

Reports to:

Summer Horse Interns, Guest Services Coordinator and Summer Staff Coordinators

Qualifications

·  Prior knowledge and experience with horses is preferred.

·  Once trained able to instruct and maintain order of up to 15-20 riders with basic riding knowledge.

·  Assertive enough to control a rowdy horse and able to remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations

Job Responsibilities

The Horse Wrangler has the responsibility, privilege and duty to assist the Trail West Horse Interns and Horse Program Manager in every aspect of the Family Camp horse program. Specific duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

1.  Assist with trail rides, arena rides and pony rides throughout the week.

2.  Assist with Wrangler Breakfast - trail ride, cooking, program and clean up.

3.  Assist with weekly all camp activities.

4.  Check and clean horse’s hooves on a daily basis & fly spray as needed.

5.  Clean corrals as needed.

6.  Water and feed horses daily.

7.  Brush horses daily.

8.  Check tack twice daily; clean tack once a week.

9.  Assist with various other jobs and projects around Trail West and Rancho Barn as needed.

10.  Maintain and clean the entire Barn area.

11.  Assist with pony rides, cart rides and petting zoo activities

Summer Staff Responsibilities

In addition to the aforementioned tasks all Summer Staff members are also expected to participate in other activities including, but not limited to:

1.  Contact work with all guests, especially teenagers: learn their names, get to know them, help them to feel included and a part of camp

2.  Assist program as needed; round up, kids klub, activities, carnival, tableau, etc….

3.  Work Crew/Summer Staff Night: you may be asked to give your testimony

4.  Young Life Club, as requested: sing, play up the program

5.  Kids Klub Activities: set-up and run games, help kids as needed, run events

Dress

Jeans, Western shirts, t-shirts, raingear, Western boots, and a cowboy hat. The Wrangler Breakfast can be rather chilly, therefore, a warm jacket and sweatshirts are recommended as well. All Summer Staff are expected to start each day in clean clothes and attend any dinners and Club meeting the same way (See Appearance in the Summer Staff Expectations information for more details). As a horse wrangler you are expected to be in western attire whenever guests are around the barn, leading a ride or not.
