Materials:

  • current Arkansas Diamond Nominee Books
  • wipe- off story map graphic organizer from Carson-Dellosa
  • Student Story Map Graphic Organizer (See attached.)
  • 11 X 14 construction paper
  • pencils and crayons
  • Arkansas Diamond Nominee Books front coversheet (See attached.)
  • series of story elements handouts (See attached.)

Directions:

  1. This activity will last until every Arkansas Diamond Nominee Book is read. The first lesson should discuss the Arkansas Diamond Nominee Books and the voting process. Students will then put their books together using a sheet of 11X14 construction paper folded in half. They will then glue the front cover sheet on and decorate.
  1. The next lessons will consist of reading an Arkansas Diamond Nominee Book, discussing the story, filling in the Story Element Map and/or completing one of the student story element handouts. Students will keep their Story Element Maps or story element handouts in their books to use to remind them of their favorite book during voting time.
  1. Each time a book is read, a new skill that is encompassed in the book may be introduced, such as fiction and nonfiction, fantasy and realistic fiction and other literature genres, parts of a book, author/title, organization of Easy Section, call numbers, etc.
