Metals, Metalloids, and Nonmetals Essay

Compare and contrast the three different types of elements using their physical properties, and explain how you are able to determine if an element is a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid. Also, include the location of the elements on the periodic table. Your essay must have an introduction (1 paragraph), a body (3 paragraphs), and a conclusion (1 paragraph).

Expository Essay:

The Introductory Paragraphshould explain the main idea of the essay (Physical properties of metals, metalloids, and nonmetals). The opening sentence should tell about the first paragraph and summarize the content of the next three paragraphs (the body). For example, you could mention the periodic table and that it consists of all the known elements. You could include that the periodic table is organized by metals, metalloids, and nonmetals, also that we use physical properties to help us identify if an element is a metal, metalloid, or nonmetal. You may want to briefly explain that physical properties are characteristics of an object. This introductory paragraph should be no more than five or six sentences long, and each sentence should link with the one after it.

The Main Bodyconsists of the next three paragraphs and should explain in a step-by-step manner the main idea of the introductory paragraph. For example, paragraph two should detail the physical properties of metals (be detailed about the physical properties and their meanings, do not just list the physical properties), paragraph three should explain in detail, the physical properties of nonmetals, and paragraph four should explain in detail the physical properties of metalloids.
The Conclusionparagraph (paragraph five), should restate the main idea of the essay, summarizing what it was that the reader learned from your essay. For example, you can explain how the periodic table consists of elements and how an element’s physical properties can be used to help identify whether or not it is a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid. You can also include that once you know whether or not an element is a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid, you can easily locate it on the periodic table, because the table is organized by metals, metalloids, and nonmetals.
