Communication Intern (Full-time), Communication Team

Public-Sector Alliances and Resource Mobilization Office (PARMO) in Tokyo, UNICEF

Background:

UNICEF Tokyo Office is tasked to strengthen its partnerships with key counterparts in Japan and the Republic of Korea, especially with government officials, parliamentarians, aid agencies and NGOs, to mobilize public-sector resources such as ODA and advocate for children’s rights.

The Communication Team is responsible for the conceptualization, planning, execution, monitoring and evaluation of an advocacy and communication strategy in support of policy advocacy, resource mobilization and partnership building to further the UNICEF global mission and mandate.

Under the supervision of Communication Specialist, the Communication Intern will support the Communication Team’s efforts to efficiently conduct its strategy and initiatives. The Communications Intern will support the team with high-quality translation for the day-to-day tasks.

Job title: Communication Intern

Specific duties:

1.  Translating items for the UNICEF Tokyo web site including twitter posts, press releases and media briefings. Update web site content

2.  Translating material and ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained, alongside proofreading and editing final translated versions

3.  Produce issues-based print stories for the website that communicate UNICEF Tokyo’s priorities and objectives

4.  Produce articles such as a letter to an editor and submit to a major newspaper

5.  Contribute to the development of printed communication materials, including editing images/photos and layout

6.  Assist in updating UNICEF Tokyo’s profiles on social networks (Facebook, YouTube, Flickr) with information about project activities and events

7.  Assist in writing press releases and blog entries

8.  Assist in the organization and updating of photo library and creation of video library

9.  Assist in organizing events

10.  Learn/use a content management system RedDot to assist with the web site

11.  Any other technical and operational assistance appropriate and required by the Communications Team and Tokyo Office

The incumbent will be given training on how to implement the above specific tasks.

Qualifications:

·  Excellent command of English and Japanese is a prerequisite;

·  Enrollment in a graduate-level degree program in communication, journalism, media studies, political science, international relations, English literature and any other related academic fields;

·  Experience in translating English into Japanese is a prerequisite;

·  Strong oral and written communication skills;

·  Critical reasoning and problem solving skills;

·  Capability and self-initiative to carry out assigned tasks at a professional level and largely without supervision;

·  Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is a requirement;

·  Experience in writing an article in a newsroom setting an asset;

·  Knowledge of content management systems such as RedDot will be an asset;

·  Knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator will be considered an asset;

Start date: The middle of April 2013

Conditions and Remuneration:

The successful candidate will be based at UNICEF Tokyo Office 5 days a week, on a full-time basis for an initial period of three months.

Internships at UNICEF are unpaid, however daily transportation expenses will be compensated.
