Youth Council Meeting Minutes

I. Call to Order/Introductions:

·  Meeting was called to order at 2:10pm.

·  The meeting was opened by Granville Freeman.

·  Brief introductions were made by Granville Freeman.

II.  Approval of Minutes:

·  Council members were asked to review minutes from the March 21, 2012 meeting.

·  Motion was made for approval of minutes by Shayla Jones.

·  Seconded by Rev. Don Ezell.

·  The motion was passed unanimously and approved by all.

III.  Action Items:

A.  Youth Council Chair

·  Granville Freeman introduced Daneea Badio as the new Youth Council Chair Person. The Council is looking forward to exploring new avenues to help our youth.

·  Daneea Badio stated that she is extremely excited about the youth team and moving forward. She also stated that it would be a great idea to invite the youth out to the Council meetings.

B. Program Structure and Development

·  Granville Freeman gave an update of the Youth ASSETS program

·  The working lunch was a great success. The Youth ASSETS team would like for the council members to attend the next working lunch.

C. Volunteer Opportunities

·  The Cobb Literacy Council is looking for corporations and people interested in making a difference in the lives of the youth in our Cobb county community. If you areinterested in volunteering, please contactDonna Frankovskyat 770-528-8094 or .

·  The program has been designed to match volunteers with individuals who need one-on-one tutoring in Reading, Math and Language Arts, please visit the CobbWorks website @ https://www.cobbworks.org/ to complete the application and return via fax at 770-528-8078

IV.  RFP Details:

A. New Providers

·  Paxen Learning Corporation

o  Paxen provides a comprehensive service for out-of-school youth seeking their GED. Paxen has a specialized accelerated GED program. The program employs a highly successful approach that is intense and accelerated. Within four weeks using our curriculum, the participant should be ready for GED testing. Paxen also provide educational instructional services for placement in employment, and attainment of a degree or certificate.

·  Communities in Schools (CIS)

o  Is still in the process of developing their program

o  Currently interviewing for positions

B. Discussion

·  Question was asked about GED and Military

o  When obtaining a GED, the military only take a select few. It would be more beneficial for the participant to go to college and apply for the military after obtaining an Associate’s degree.

V.  Other Announcements and Reminders:

·  Meeting adjourned at 3:20pm.

·  Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Mansour Center

·  Youth ASSETS application is online (www.cobbworks.org) Youth ASSETS is asking potential participants to see the site for any information needed, and if there are any questions, to contact the Youth ASSETS Administrative Specialist.

·  Funds readily available to help with education/ secondary education, and GED. The provider list that is approved by WIA can be located at www.gcic.edu/gawia
