Art II Course Objectives: The Art II student will refine and build upon the skills already learned and developed in Art I. Expanded approaches to painting, printmaking, drawing and sculpture will be introduced. As subject matter, the human form will be stressed. Students will work heavily from “life” – that is, to see, observe and record what is visually before him/her. Working from fantasy and from their individual minds eye will be encouraged and especially in their sketchbooks.

The student will develop their skill in the art of critique – evaluating masters’ work, their own works and the works of the class as a whole. This skill will be based on aesthetics, the formal elements and principles of art and, in the case of student work, on the fulfillment of their assignment. It will not be a judgment of anyone’s artistic abilities or product. The student will be able to articulate his/her responses to an artwork and will be encouraged to experiment and push the limits of his/her creativity. (This course is a pre-requisite for Art III and AP art classes.) The book used in class is: “The Visual Experience”, 3rd ed., Hobbs, Salome, Veith.

Grade Determinants: Students will be graded on each assigned project. The goals of each project will be made clear. Individual instruction as well as multiple class critiques will be used to help students evaluate progress. Final grades will be determined by the following measures:

The following criteria will be used to grade each project:

A. Goals of the assignment

B. Quality and Craftsmanship

C. Originality, creativity (problem-solving)

D. Work ethic (which includes clean up and deportment)

E. Respect for deadlines

Homeworkwill beevaluated on the same scale as class work and all other assignments. Homework (which will include sketchbook work) is not busy work, but an integral part of the educational and artistic experience.

Students are required to keep a sketchbookand complete all projects assigned.

GRADING SCALE
Letter Grade / Percentages / Quality Points / AP & IB Quality Points
A / 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100 / 4.0 / 5.0
B+ / 87, 88, 89 / 3.5 / 4.5
B / 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86 / 3.0 / 4.0
C+ / 77, 78, 79 / 2.5 / 3.5
C / 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76 / 2.0 / 3.0
D+ / 67, 68, 69 / 1.5 / 2.5
D / 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 / 1.0 / 2.0
E / 0 – 59 / 0.0 / 0.0

Student grades reflect student achievement and not student behavior.

Quarterly grades will round up when the percentage is .5 or higher.

In addition to achievement, work habits as noted in the report card comments will be evaluated for each course using the following symbols:

+-Surpasses Expectations

#-Meets Expectations

^-Approaching Expectations

N-Needs Improvement

The final grade is to be calculated using the quality points and not percentages, letter grades, number or point systems. No one is excused from the final exam.

2.Keep a sketchbook/journal.

3.Visit an art gallery or museum each quarter (30 points).
