A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND JEFFERY GOSSETT OF DUNCAN FOR HIS BRAVERY IN HIS SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS TO HELP SAVE A MOTORIST STRANDED ON A TRAIN TRACK WHILE THE TRAIN WAS APPROACHING.

Whereas, the members of the Senate recognize and honor the heroic actions taken by Jeffery Gossett in his successful efforts to save a stranded motorist from a fast approaching train; and

Whereas, on December 22, 2000, Mr. Gossett was stopped at an intersection in Spartanburg County and saw a car driven by a medically stricken driver go out of control, proceed down an embankment, and come to rest on railroad tracks. Mr. Gossett, along with Lyman police officer Kip Teal went to the aid of the driver as a train was quickly approaching. The driver was unable to get out of the car on his own and Mr. Gossett and Officer Teal, while working together and putting themselves in immense danger, were able to remove the driver seconds before the train struck the car; and

Whereas, the collision of the train and the car threw Mr. Gossett, Officer Teal, and the driver of the car approximately twenty feet from the tracks back on the embankment. The collision also caused the car to catch fire, but fortunately no one was seriously injured in the accident; and

Whereas, without Mr. Gossett’s help, the entire situation could have resulted in enormous injuries or possibly death to all involved, and this fine South Carolinian placed himself in peril to save the life of a motorist in need and in doing so went above and beyond what most other people would have done; and

Whereas, the Senate of South Carolina would like to publicly recognize and acknowledge these heroic efforts of Jeffery Gossett which helped save the life of a fellow citizen. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, commend Jeffery Gossett of Duncan for his bravery in his successful efforts to help save a motorist stranded on a train track while the train was approaching.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Gossett.
