The 40th International Ballad Conference of the Kommission für Volksdichtung is to be held
in Amsterdam and Terschelling (Netherlands) from Monday July 5 to Saturday July 10, 2010.
The conference is being hosted by the Meertens Institute, Amsterdam.
Introduction
Conference participants may register on Monday, July 5 2010, from 9.00 am at the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam, not far from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol). After the first sessions, there is an opening lunch at the Meertens Institute. In the afternoon we depart for Terschelling, one of the West Frisian islands in the very North of the Netherlands. Terschelling can only be reached by boat. It is famous for its nature, dunes, beaches and birds, and its maritime history. The island preserved its folk culture until the beginning of the 20th century. At that time the famous ethnomusicologist Jaap Kunst recorded traditional songs and dances, which are still performed by local groups. Halfway the busride from Amsterdam to the ferry to Terschelling, we pay a visit to the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, an open-air museum featuring traditional life in the fishing villages of the former Zuiderzee (‘southern sea’), now a fresh water lake called IJsselmeer. From there we will drive across the Afsluitdijk (Closure Dike), a causeway separating the Wadden Sea from the IJsselmeer since 1932. In the harbour of Harlingen in Friesland we take the ferry to Terschelling
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be devoted to paper sessions. On Thursday the annual general meeting of the Kommision für Volksdichtung will take place. Friday morning there will be a paper session and a short formal closing session. On two or three evenings there will be an optional cultural programme, including a concert and a folkdance demonstration. There will be an optional conference excursion on Friday afternoon. On Friday as well, the traditional conference dinner will be held in the form of a Beach Barbecue (optional). Departure will be on Saturday morning.

For those who will arrive on Sunday July 4 and spend the night in Amsterdam:
OPTION 1: the HEM-hotel ( This is modern hotel with a good quality – price relationship, situated in a residential area 3 kilometers away from the city center and within easy reach of Amsterdam Airport. It takes a 2 - 8 minute walk from the nearest tram or metro station to get there (see map). You’ll get a discount from normal prices at this hotel if you book it through the booking form. Breakfast & tourist tax included.
OPTION 2: in Amsterdam there are many hotels in various quality and price ranges. One can book a hotel from numerous websites, including the Tourist Office’s site: Please mind that if you choose one of the cheap hotels in the city center, you might find yourself in the company of drugstourists.
If you want to share a room, please use the booking form. We can only provide sharing possibilities as long as there are people willing to share and we can only provide single rooms as long as there are rooms available.

Terschelling
======
The conference will continue in the village of West-Terschelling on the isle of Terschelling. We will arrive here on July 5 at 21.50h. Departure on Saturday July 10. Both the hotel and youth hostel are close to the conference hall (Zeevaartschool / Maritime Institute).
OPTION 1: Hotel Europa, a simple but comfortable hotel in West-Terschelling. All rooms have a private bathroom. Tourist tax, tourist season supplement and breakfast included.

OPTION 2: Stay Okay (Youth Hostel), prices per person. This Youth Hostel is very basic (bunk beds). Most rooms have a private bathroom. Tourist tax and breakfast included.

To get to and from your hotel or the Meertens Insitute: there are excellent public transportation possibilities. To get to your hotel: from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) there is an easy railway connection to railway station Amsterdam Zuid (c. 8 minutes, closest to the Meertens Institute) and Amsterdam Central station (c. 15 minutes). The Meertens Institute (Joan Muyskenweg 25, Amsterdam, see map) is a one minute walk away from metro station Overamstel. Metro’s 50 and 51 stop at the Overamstel station. Coming from the city centre or Amsterdam Central Station one can take metro 51 (10 minutes to Overamstel). Coming from Amsterdam Zuid Station one can take metro 50 (direction: Central Station. 4 minutes to Overamstel).
A single metro ticket will cost € 2,60.
A 2nd class train ticket from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station € 2,80, and from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Zuid € 2,60.
