PEO – Mississauga Chapter Mentoring Program

QUESTIONNAIRE

Description of Mentor Program

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Mississauga chapter has started a mentor program where the experienced professional engineers (mentors) provide guidance and advice to the candidates for professional engineering license ((P.Eng.), hereby called as mentees. Mentoring is the transfer of skills and knowledge of experienced professionals to new engineers and thus provide a great benefit to the engineering profession and society. Mentoring provides mentees with skills they may traditionally have to acquire through trials and errors and costly mistakes. Mentors help mentees to obtain their P.Eng. license by providing their engineering expertise but are not expected to be career counselors or find jobs for the mentees.

This program has been launched with help of three external agencies: Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC), Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre (DBNC), and Access Counselling and Community Services (ACCES). These agencies are in the business of mentoring for a long time with excellent track record. We are enormously thankful to these agencies for giving us a solid lift off.

There is a tremendous need for mentoring among the immigrant engineers for whom the P.Eng. licenses give the required engineering degree credentials as well as four years equivalent Canadian work experience in their respective field of engineering. This becomes extremely beneficial to them to settle in Canada with gainful employment.

In Greek mythology, King Odysseus entrusted his friend Mentor with the care and teaching of his son Telemachus. Since that time, the word “mentor” has come to be defined as an “experienced and trusted advisor”. We hope that our program will help the less experienced engineers especially the new immigrant engineers gain P.Eng. licenses and prosper in their career.
